Young Stars: Jets vs. Edmonton

After a strong, physical 5-3 victory over the San Jose Sharks rookies Friday night, the Winnipeg Jets hopefuls were back at it this morning for their third consecutive practice. In their second game in as many nights, the Jets will take on the Edmonton Oilers rookies. Game time goes at 9:30pm CST.

We had a chance to catch up with General Manager, Kevin Cheveldayoff to hear his thoughts on the tournament and the young Jets.

"It's an exciting opportunity to see all of the young prospects, or a good portion of them, putting on the Winnipeg Jets uniform. For a lot of them its the first time and as a franchise, getting a glimpse into what will hopefully be our future. It's exciting for the coaching staff and it's exciting for the management staff."

Chevy talked about the advice passed on to these young prospects and shared some of what they are looking for during the weekend.

"We tell them to be themselves," he said. "Go out and play the way they have played. Obviously for them, they haven't played on a team together so it's a little bit of a learning curve but, it's a great opportunity to get their legs underneath them before the main training camp. Again, it's all part of the evaluation process."

We also had a chance to catch up with Jets' prospect Ryan Olsen after the skate.

Olsen, 19, is feeling right at home here in Penticton, BC. The Delta, BC, native plays just 30 minutes away in Prospera Place for the Kelowna Rockets of the WHL.

"Having some family out here to see me play is pretty special," said Olsen. "My whole family is here. My brother and sister, mom and dad and my two grandparents, they are really proud to be here and I'm really excited."

The 6-foot-2, 190 pound centre played in 69 games for the Rockets last year, scoring 32 goals and 56 points. He was drafted in the 6th round (160th overall) by the Jets in 2012.

"I just want to show my stuff. I'd like to show the staff that I can play at the next level. It's really exciting, during the first warmup I was super excited to wear the Jets jersey but I'm here to play hockey and focus on my game and focus on myself."
