Jets 0, Rangers 3 Final

Wednesday, 06.08.2014 / 4:52 AM

Marian Gaborik scored a pair of goals and assisted on another to help lead his team to a 3-0 victory in New York City Sunday night. The Rangers win their fourth in a row while the Jets drop to 3-2-1 in their last six games all on this road trip.

Derek Stepan opened the scoring on the power play at 10:01 of the second period with Marian Gaborik and Michael Del Zotto picked up the helpers on the play. Gaborik added one of his own in the third period on a 2-on-1 opportunity with Stepan.

He added an empty net goal to secure the 3-0 win over the Jets and walked away with the third star of the night.

Shots were 27-23 in favour of the Rangers. Ondrej Pavelec stopping 24 of the 27 while Biron picked up the second star earning the shutout.

The Jets will head to Buffalo to wrap up their seven game road trip Tuesday night. Catch the game at 6:00pm on TSN Jets or listen to it on TSN-Radio 1290.

Marian Gaborik was first to head to the penalty box giving the Winnipeg Jets the first man advantage at 8:07 of the opening period. The Jets came as close as it comes to getting the puck into the back of the net in the dying seconds of the power play as every player on the ice crashed the net creating a dog pile in the crease. The puck somehow stayed out of the net as Rangers goaltender Martin Biron whacked it out of the air with the butt-end of his stick.

The Jets would have one more power play before the period would expire but failed to convert on the advantage. After 20 minutes of play, the game remained scoreless. Shots were 9-5 in Winnipeg's favour.

The first goal of the night came on the power play for the NY Rangers as Derek Stepan fired a wrister into a wide open net from a tough angle beating Ondrej Pavelec stick side top shelf. 1-0 Rangers midway through the second frame. Michael Del Zotto and Marian Gaborik wheel in the helpers on the goal.

Artem Anisimov had a great chance to make it 2-0 Rangers but Pavelec was there to make another key save before the second period came to an end. The Rangers led 8-7 through the second period of play.

Zach Bogosian played 17:53 of ice time through 40 minutes of play.

The Jets ran into some early penalty problems starting with Brett Festerling getting the gate for cross checking at 1:14 into the third. Just 58 seconds later, Mark Flood was caught for tripping putting the Jets down two men for 1:02 seconds. If that wasn't enough, Mark Stuart got his stick up too high trying to clear the puck on the penalty kill and went off at 2:43.

Somehow, someway, the Jets killed off over three minutes of 5-on-3 and kept the game at 1-0 with three defencemen in the penalty box.

Marian Gaborik made it 2-0 Rangers at 8:31 of the final period. Dustin Byfuglien got caught pinching on the play at the blueline. Stepan and Gaborik raced in on a 2-on-1, Stepan made a nifty pass to Gaborik who made no mistake putting the puck past Pavelec.

The Rangers added an empty net goal late in the period to pick up their fourth straight win. The Jets drop to 3-2-1 in their last six. They will wrap up their seven game road trip in Buffalo on Tuesday night.

Catch that game on TSN-JETS or listen to it on TSN-Radio 1290 at 6:00 pm.
