Andrew Ladd picked up his seventh goal of the season, but it came a little too late and it wasn't quite enough as the Jets slid to a 3-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins Friday night.
Both goaltenders were very good tonight, both stopping 25 shots on net. Marc-Andre Fleury earned the 1st star of the night with the win, while Ondrej Pavelec settled with the 2nd star.
The Jets dropped their second straight home game this week and will look to snap that skid starting on Sunday as they welcome the Boston Bruins. Game time goes at 5pm on TSN Jets and on TSN Radio 1290.
Just over the three minute mark of the opening period, Chris Thorburn and Penguins Deryk Engelland dropped the gloves to get an early rise from the already loud crowd at the MTS Centre.
Unfortunately, the momentum swung to the visiting bench as Craig Adams put the Pens on the board seconds after the fight. The play started with Joe Vitale beating his check along the boards at the blue line and going hard to the net. He snapped one at Pavelec that was just kicked aside Adam's was there to tap home the easy rebound. 1-0 Pens.
The Jets' best chance of the period came just over the midway mark when Alex Burmistrov used his quick hands to stick-handle around his check Kris Letang in the Pens zone, he moved the puck around and released a quality shot on net. Close, but couldn't solve Fleury.
The first penalty of the night went to Brooks Orpik for cross-checking at 10:59 sending the Jets to their first power play. The power play continued to struggle as the Jets couldn't muster much on the advantage.
After 20 minutes of play, the Jets trailed 1-0. Shots on net were 12-6 for the Pens.
The first few minutes of the second period was end to end play with a few quality chances on both ends but no pucks in the back of the net.
Near six minutes into the period, James Wright and Craig Adams dropped the gloves in the corner trying to spark their respective benches. Both head to the box for 5 minute majors.
The next few minutes was all Jets as they spent a significant amount of time circling around Fleury, throwing everything they had on net but unfortunately, none of the chances were going in. Then, with three minutes later and the momentum drastically on the Jets side, Thorburn took a tripping penalty sending the Pens to their first power play.
The home squad were able to shut the door on the Pens advantage and head to the dressing room down by just one goal. Shots through 40 minutes were 21-20 Pens.
With the Jets still looking for the equalizer in this game, they didn't make things easy on themselves. Zach Redmond was called for interference at 13:18 of the third period on an arguably questionable call but nonetheless, the Jets had to kill off another penalty. Then things got even worse. Mark Stuart broke his stick on the kill and as he was grabbing another one from the bench, tripped up one of the Penguins and so he then went off, putting the visitors on a long 5-on-3.
The Penguins were able to capitalize on the advantage as Chris Neil sent a hard wrist shot through Pavelec from the face-off dot on the right side. Evgeni Malkin sent him the nice pass to get the first assist and Sidney Crosby picked up the second helper. 2-0 Pens, late in the game.
Then at 19:32, Adams answered back by putting in an empty net goal to make it a 3-1 final.
