Final OT: Jets 3, Panthers 2

Friday, 08.03.2013 / 11:08 PM

The Jets came into Florida with 'rematch' on their minds, after falling 4-1 Tuesday night at the hands of the Panthers. After a big 2-1 character win Thursday night in Tampa Bay, the Jets looked to carry their momentum back in Sunrise to take another two points.

It took nearly 65 minutes, but the Jets found a way to beat the Panthers, 3-2 in Sunrise. Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler both scored in the first period and it was Dustin Byfuglien who played the overtime hero with 40 seconds left to scoop up the extra point.

Ondrej Pavelec had a great bounce back game making 38 saves in the win. Markstrom stopped 25 pucks for the loss.

The Jets will wrap up their road trip in New Jersey against the Devils on Sunday. Game time is 6:00 pm on TSN Jets.

FIRST PERIOD

2:35: Andrew Ladd opens the scoring on a costly Panthers turnover at the blueline. Ladd quickly turned and charged the net, and instead of passing fired a hard wrist shot that squeezed its way through Markstrom and across the goal line. Bryan Little picks up the lone assist on Ladd's 13th of the year.

17:48: Blake Wheeler made it 2-0 after the Panthers turned over the puck again in the neutral zone. Wheeler carried the puck into the zone and danced around his defender and snapped a hard shot that flew past Markstrom. Captain Ladd picked up the assist on Wheeler's 8th of the season.

Jonathan Huberdeau closed the gap for the Panthers with 12 seconds left on the clock in the first period. Pavelec made the initial save but the puck bounced off his crest for Huberdeau to swing at. The puck squeezed past Pavelec and just trickled across the line. Ron Hainsey was there to try to bat it off of the line but it was too little, too late and after a long review, it was called a good goal.

Through 20 minutes, the Jets were up 1-0 but the Panthers held the 11-7 edge in shots.

SECOND PERIOD

7:27: Jim Slater took his second slashing penalty of the night putting the Panthers back on the power play and they almost made them pay but instead the Jets found themselves on a shorthanded 2-on-1 opportunity. Wheeler and Wright raced down the ice after the turnover but Wright couldn't settle the puck down and shot wide. The penalty expired and the Jets held their one goal lead.

Both teams had a fair share of chances in the second half of the period but the Jets were able to cling tight to their 2-1 lead after two periods. Shots were 25-19 Panthers.

THIRD PERIOD

5:50: Grant Clitsome fails to clear the puck out of his zone and has his pocket picked. The puck lands right onto a Panthers stick and they made the Jets pay. Tomas Kopecky made a nice pass onto the tape of Shawn Matthias who snapped one past Pavelec to tie the game at two.

10:42: Zach Bogosian took a holding penalty sending the Jets to a crucial penalty kill past the midway mark of the game. Pavelec made a couple huge saves to keep the Jets even with the Panthers and they killed off the penalty. With the kill, the Jets remain perfect on the penalty kill on this road trip, going 11 for 11 so far.

This game would need extra time as the Jets and Panthers were knotted at two through 60 minutes.

OT 4:19: Dustin Byfuglien played the hero as he snapped the game-winner past Markstrom with 40 seconds to play in extra time. Byfuglien made a beautiful play to dangle the puck through his defenders to put himself in the slot and fire it under the glove.
