Winnipeg Jets agree to terms with six players
July 1st marked the beginning of free agency in the NHL, and the Winnipeg Jets set to work immediately, agreeing to terms with six players. On the opening weekend, the Jets agreed to terms with three defencemen, Derek Meech, Randy Jones & Mark Flood, and three forwards, Aaron Gagnon, Tanner Glass & Rick Rypien.

As per club policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.


Derek Meech:

Meech, 26, appeared in 74 games last season with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League where he scored 37 points (10g, 27a) and collected 81 penalty minutes. The Winnipeg, MB native has played in 126 career NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings from 2006 to 2010. In that span, he scored 16 points (4g, 12a) and collected 39 penalty minutes. Meech also played in a pair of Stanley Cup playoff games with the Red Wings in 2009. In 304 career AHL games with the Griffins from 2004 to 2011, Meech scored 102 points (27g, 75a) and collected 246 penalty minutes.

Meech was originally drafted by the Red Wings in the seventh round, 229th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

Randy Jones:

Jones, 29, appeared in 61 games last season with the Tampa Bay Lightning where he scored 13 points (1g, 12a) and collected 15 penalty minutes. In five Stanley Cup playoff games with the Lightning last spring, the Quispamsis, NB native collected an assist and two penalty minutes. In 326 career NHL games with Philadelphia and Tampa Bay from 2003 to 2011, Jones has scored 103 points (19g, 84a) and collected 177 penalty minutes. In 31 career Stanley Cup playoff games, Jones has collected four assists and eight penalty minutes.

Mark Flood:

Flood, 26, appeared in 63 games last season with the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League where he scored 40 points (11g, 29a) and collected 29 penalty minutes. The Charlottetown, PEI native has played in six career NHL games with the New York Islanders in 2009-10 where he collected an assist. In 306 career AHL games with Syracuse, Albany, Bridgeport, and Manitoba from 2005 to 2011, Flood scored 140 points (42g, 98a) and collected 137 penalty minutes.

Flood was originally drafted by Montreal in the sixth round, 188th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Aaron Gagnon:

Gagnon, 25, appeared in 19 games last season with the Dallas Stars where he collected a pair of assists. He has played in a total of 21 games in his NHL, all with Dallas from 2009 to 2011. In 58 games with the American Hockey League’s Texas Stars, the native of Quesnel, BC scored 37 points (14g, 23a) and collected 24 penalty minutes. In 222 career games in the AHL with Iowa, Grand Rapids, and Texas, Gagnon scored 115 points (49g, 66a) and 102 penalty minutes. In 40 career post-season games in the AHL with Grand Rapids and Texas, Gagnon has 19 points (11g, 8a) and 24 penalty minutes

Gagnon was originally drafted by Phoenix in the eighth round, 240th overall, in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft.

Tanner Glass:

Glass, 27, appeared in 73 games last season with the Vancouver Canucks where he scored 10 points (3g, 7a) and collected 72 penalty minutes. The Regina, SK native has appeared in 184 career games in the NHL with Florida and Vancouver where he’s scored 23 points (8g, 15a) and collected 233 penalty minutes. Glass has also played in 24 career Stanley Cup playoff games, including 20 last season when the Canucks advanced to the Stanley Cup Final. Glass has also played in 91 career games in the American Hockey League with the Rochester Americans where he scored 25 points (10g, 15a) and 189 penalty minutes.
 
Glass was originally drafted by Florida in the ninth round, 265th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Rick Rypien:

Rypien, 27, appeared in nine games last season with the Vancouver Canucks where he collected an assist and 31 penalty minutes. The Coleman, AB native has played in 119 career games in the NHL with the Canucks from 2005 to 2011 where he has scored 16 points (9g, 7a) and 226 penalty minutes. Rypien has also played in 17 career Stanley Cup playoff games where he has collected three assists and 47 penalty minutes.
 
Rypien also played in 11 games last season with the Manitoba Moose where he collected two assists and nine penalty minutes. He has played in a total of 116 games in the AHL, all with Manitoba from 2004 to 2011. In that span, Rypien has scored 39 points (16g, 23a) and collected 252 penalty minutes. Rypien has also played in 40 career AHL playoff games where he has scored three points (2g, 1a) and 77 penalty minutes.
