The Winnipeg Jets are pleased today to announce Mark Morrison has been named Assistant Coach of Winnipeg’s American Hockey League affiliate in St. John’s, NL.
Morrison, 48, joins newly appointed Head Coach Keith McCambridge behind the bench in St. John’s, NL. He has spent the past five seasons coaching the ECHL’s Victoria Salmon Kings, coaching against McCambridge for two of those seasons when McCambridge was head man in Alaska. Morrison began his coaching career in 2005-06 as an Assistant Coach of the Salmon Kings but took over as the Head Coach after 27 games. Since then, Morrison has led the Salmon Kings to a record of 173-133-27 and four playoff series wins. Last season, Morrison and the Salmon Kings reached the third round of the Kelly Cup Playoffs after finishing the regular season with a record of 32-36-4.
Morrison was originally drafted by the New York Rangers in the third round, 51st overall, in the 1981 NHL Entry Draft. In 1981, Morrison was named as a member of the Team Canada squad that captured the gold medal at the World Junior Championships. He was also the captain of the 1982 team that captured the bronze medal. The Delta, BC native played 10 games for the Rangers and scored two points (1g, 1a) early in his professional playing career. Morrison later continued his international experience with the Canadian National Team in 1983-84 and 1988-89. He later played 15 seasons in Europe, playing three seasons in Italy with Merano and Milan and another 12 seasons in Scotland with the Fife Flyers.
