New 'After School Matters' Program Launched
New Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation joins forces with Greg Selinger to announce new job skills & leadership program
“We know that kids need positive after school activities to stay busy, safe and out of trouble,” said Selinger. “I am proud to work with Mark Chipman and the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation to help students develop skills, find mentors and prepare for life outside the classroom. We will work together to give kids a better shot.”
A new program based on the successful Chicago After School Matters program will provide apprenticeship and mentorship opportunities for high school students during after school hours.
“We have been pleased to work with Greg Selinger and his government when building the MTS Centre and again in bringing back the Jets,” said Chipman, Chairman & Governor, True North Sports & Entertainment. “Our foundation is excited about our next partnership supporting kids through the After School Matters program.”
Businesses, community organizations and skilled professionals will provide intensive instruction to students in five areas: sports, science, technology, performing arts and communications. The program will be launched in Winnipeg’s core area in 2012 and will be expanded to high needs areas throughout the province.
The Winnipeg Jets and True North Sports and Entertainment will be the program’s first community partner. Their organization will give kids hands-on experience with sports and facility management and marketing.
True North Sports & Entertainment Limited is also proud to announce that after 15 years, the former Manitoba Moose Yearling Foundation will now be known as the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation. The Foundation is the charitable arm of the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club.
True North Sports & Entertainment is also thrilled to introduce Dwayne Green as the new Executive Director of the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation. Green has extensive background in public education as a Vice-Principal in the St. James School Division. He will continue on with the leadership of a program launched by the Foundation a few years ago which rewarded students who consistently attend class with enrollment in a hockey academy during the winter months. It is the plan of the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation to expand this program in the future.
