11\/07 IceCaps Weekly
It was a pleasant flight home for the St. John’s IceCaps after a tremendous six-game New England road trip that concluded on Sunday.

The IceCaps won four straight games away from home this week to finish 4-0-2-0 on the trip and further cement itself atop the Atlantic Division. On Tuesday, Kevin Clark led the charge with a pair of goals in a 6-3 St. John’s victory over the Worcester Sharks (San Jose). Friday’s contest versus Connecticut (New York Rangers) saw the IceCaps come back from a one-goal deficit to win 6-3 on the strength of four third-period goals, including the game-winner by Eric O’Dell.

St. John’s continued its impressive play on Saturday by killing off all six Worcester power plays in a 3-1 victory. Goaltender Eddie Pasquale made a number of huge saves in the dying minutes to preserve the win. Finally, despite blowing a three-goal lead to Bridgeport (New York Islanders) on Sunday afternoon, the IceCaps were able to come away with a victory on Marco Rosa’s third period power play tally.

The IceCaps have won four straight overall and have recorded at least a point in each of its last six games. The recent string of success has vaulted St. John’s into first overall in the AHL with 21 points, two points up on the Houston Aeros (Minnesota).

The IceCaps return home this week to start a lengthy six-game homestand, beginning with two games against the Connecticut Whale this weekend. The win by St. John’s on Friday was the first meeting between the two teams this season. Connecticut is lead by rookie Jonathan Audy-Marchessault, who has recorded 11 points in 12 contests. The Whale also ranks seventh in the AHL in goals against, allowing an average of 2.67 per game.

ICECAPS NOTES:
  • Eddie Money: Goaltender Eddie Pasquale came up huge all week long for the IceCaps. Pasquale stopped 88-of-95 shots (0.926 save %) and won all three of his starts while picking up a fourth win on Sunday in relief of David Aebischer. The IceCaps netminder is now 5-0-0-0 with a 1.75 GAA and a 0.935 save % on the season.
  • Road Warriors, Part Two: With four wins this week, the IceCaps improved to 6-0-2-0 away from home this season and have recorded at least one point in all eight games as the visiting team.
  • Jet Setting: Three more players – defencemen Brett Festerling, Mark Flood, and Paul Postma –were recalled by Winnipeg this week. On Saturday, Flood recorded his first NHL goal and added an assist in the Jets’ overtime loss to New Jersey.
  • Extra-Special Teams: The IceCaps’ special teams have finally been jolted to life. St. John’s went 6-for-18 with the man advantage this week and killed off 16-of-17 penalties over the same span.
  • Go to the Well: Winger Shawn Weller has scored all of his goals this season on the power play, with two coming in Saturday night’s 3-1 victory over the Worcester Sharks.

ICECAPS LAUNCH ICECAPS CARE FOUNDATION

On Wednesday, St. John’s IceCaps President and CEO Danny Williams officially announced the establishment of the IceCaps Care Foundation, the charitable arm of the American Hockey League’s newest team.

IceCaps Care was created as a way to give back to the community and the people who support the team. The main goal of the foundation is to be recognized as an dedicated community partner that provides financial assistance to charitable organizations throughout Newfoundland and Labrador.

"For me and our entire organization, bringing professional hockey back to this province was about more than just putting a great team out there for fans to enjoy," said Mr. Williams. "My vision for the IceCaps has always been to have a team that is competitive and energetic on the ice, and equally committed to giving back to our community off the ice."

IceCaps Care will also work in partnership with the Williams Family Foundation to distribute foundation revenues to various local charities. The Williams Family Foundation was created several years ago and places priority on assisting children facing health challenges; however, IceCaps Care will also support selected other charities with a broader focus. The partnership will allow IceCaps Care to broaden its scope and provide assistance to groups or individuals not included in the IceCaps Care mandate.
