Today the puck dropped on one of the most exciting and intense hockey tournaments of the year and it couldn't have kicked off any better for Team Canada.

Two Winnipeg Jets prospects are suiting up for their respective countries in the 2012 World Junior Hockey Championships in Edmonton and Calgary.

Forward Mark Scheifele will don Team Canada's jersey and Ivan Telegin will play for Team Russia.

CANADA 8, FINLAND 1

It was a blowout matinee on Boxing Day today as Team Canada walked away with a dominating 8-1 victory over Team Finland.

Winnipeg native, Mark Stone led the red and white with a hat-trick while Jonathan Huberdeau tallied five points, a goal and four assists. Ryan Strome added a goal and three assists and  Brendan Gallagher of the Vancouver Giants (WHL) also scored for Canada.

Stone opened the scoring for Canada at 2:14 of the first period and Gallagher added to the lead just two minutes later.

Alexander Ruutu got the Finns got on the board early in the second period but it was all Canada after that. 1:41 later, Canada responded and took back their two-goal lead. Huberdeau and Stone reconnected to go up 3-1. Huberdeau and Dougie Hamilton each tallied goals before the second period would end as Canada head to the third leading 5-1.

Tampa Bay Lightning's, Brett Connolly notched another early in the third period and Stone picked up his third of the night near the four minute mark to make it 7-1. Ryan Strome added one more near the end of the game as the Canadians wrapped up game one with an 8-1 win.

No points for Scheifele tonight but he did see a fair amount of ice-time, took 12 face-offs for Canada and was on the power play unit. He had two shots on net and was a plus 1 on the night.

Canada will have Tuesday off before facing the Czech Republic on Wednesday night.
