12/03/26 Playoff Picture
After a day off on Sunday, the Jets are right back in action where they will hope to use the energy that the MTS Centre crowd brings to build some momentum in the playoff race. The other racers, Washington and Buffalo have extended the gap with Winnipeg over the course of the weekend, but the Jets do have a game in hand and hope to keep that magical eighth-place line within four points.
On the horizon for the Jets is a home match-up on Wednesday night against the Eastern Conference leading New York Rangers. Wednesday will be a big test for Winnipeg, and after that the Jets head out on the road for four games that they should be able to use to make up some ground in the playoff race.
Minnesota 0, Washington 3
Alex Ovechkin was looking like his two-time MVP self last night, wreaking havoc on the Minnesota Wild all game long. Ovechkin scored a goal and added an assist, but was all over the ice as the Capitals prevailed. Call-up goaltender Braden Holtby stopped all 28 shots he faced for the shutout.
Washington's win brings them back into eighth spot in the Eastern Conference (Buffalo had temporarily grabbed it with their win on Saturday night). However, both the Capitals and Sabres sit neck-and-neck in the playoff race with 84 points through 76 games. The Jets are six points back, having played one less game.
TONIGHT'S KEY MATCH-UPS:
Ottawa Senators at Winnipeg Jets (7:30 PM, TSN Jets)
Tonight is another 'game-in-hand' situation for the Winnipeg Jets. Over the weekend, both Buffalo and Washington were able to gain valuable points and now sit six points up on the Jets. The Jets having played one less game than both the Sabres and Capitals must use tonight's game against the Senators to gain that lost ground.
Ottawa meanwhile has slid slightly over the last little while. At one point this month they sat in second place in the Eastern Conference, but now sit in seventh. Wtih 86 points, the Senators could easily find themselves in a dogfight for a playoff spot if they continue to struggle down the stretch.
Tonight's game is a terrific opportunity for the Jets to gain ground while the Capitals and Sabres are idle. Winnipeg must capitalize!
