Jim Slater named nominee for Bill Masterton Trophy
The Winnipeg Jets are proud to announce that Jim Slater has been named a nominee for the Bill Masterton Trophy, awarded annually by the National Hockey League.
Slater, 29, has moved into a key role for the Jets this season, centering the team’s third-line checking unit with Chris Thorburn and Tanner Glass. Embraced by Winnipeg fans, the line has been affectionately dubbed the GST Line.
In terms of dedication and perseverance, Slater is on track to play a career-high number of games in one season. The 2002 first-round draft pick has played in 72 games with the Jets this season for 17 points (10G, 7A) and 40 penalty minutes.
As an effort to get involved in the community and meet Winnipeggers, Slater approached the Jets Community Relations Department about starting a promotion called “Take Jim Slater to Work Day.” As the word got out, over 6500 individuals applied to take Jim Slater to their workplace – easily becoming the most popular promotion of the season. So far, Slater has voluntarily spent his off-days visiting a fire hall, police station, local welding company, and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
Slater is also actively involved in the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation, the official charity of the Winnipeg Jets Hockey Club. This past summer, Slater participated in the annual charity golf classic that raised $40,000 for the foundation. Since its inception, the Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation has raised over 2.1 million dollars for children’s charities in Winnipeg.
Previously while with the Atlanta Thrashers, Slater was named to the 2010 Dan Snyder Memorial Award for the Thrashers player who embodies perseverance, dedication and hard work without reward or recognition.
