COMPLETE STANDINGS

It's never over until it's over, and for the Winnipeg Jets, their playoff hopes are still not technically done. Monday's 6-4 loss to the Ottawa Senators was certainly disappointing, and was a major blow to any playoff chances the Jets could have, but it still does not mathematically eliminate the Jets from the playoff race.

Sitting in tenth place in the Eastern Conference with 78 points with six games remaining on the schedule, the maximum amount of points the Jets could now finish the season with is 90. With this in mind, as soon as eighth place team in the Conference suprasses the 90-point threshold, the Jets are officially out of the race.

This means that of the currently seeded teams, Ottawa would only need two points to clinch a playoff berth, while Washington would need six. Any playoff hopes the Jets have now rely on winning every one of their remaining games, and hoping that both Washington and Buffalo don't win more than two each.

Notes: With their 7-2 win over the Blue Jackets the Detroit Red Wings punched their ticket to the playoffs. The Red Wings have now made the playoffs for 21 straight years!

YESTERDAY'S GAMES:

Ottawa Senators 6, Winnipeg Jets 4

Having erased the Senators lead three times, the Jets never seemed to be truly out of it until the final horn sounded at the end of the game. MTS Centre went into a frenzy with Evander Kane's tying goal with less than three minutes remaining, but the crowd was quickly silenced when Senators' captain Daniel Alfredsson gave his team their lead back only 24 seconds later.

The loss was a disappointing one for the Jets as their playoff hopes get dimmer with each passing game. Winnipeg still sits in tenth spot in the Eastern Conference with 78 points and are six points back of the Washington Capitals who hold the eight spot.

TONIGHT'S KEY MATCH-UPS:

Buffalo Sabres at Washington Capitals (6:00 PM)

Umfortunately for the Jets the NHL does not have a rule in place that could cause a possible no-points-for-either-team outcome. Maybe if they went to the tenth round of a shootout with a 0-0 score the refs could just call the game; no points for anybody?

The Sabres and Capitals sit deadlocked on the edge of the playoff picture with 84 points each. With the way things have gone the last few weeks, it looks like the winner of this game would own the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Ideal Jets Outcome: Freak snowstorm and NHL has to cancel the game forever

Tampa Bay Lightning at Boston Bruins (6;30 PM, TSN2)

Tampa Bay really doesn't have much of a chance to make the playoffs right now, but surprisingly with a win tonight they could surpass the Jets and take tenth place in the Eastern Conference. The Lightning have now won three in a row and are playing the role of spoiler down the stretch.
