Another disappointing loss for the Winnipeg Jets last night brought the team that much closer to being officially out of contention. The Jets came up short against the New York Rangers last night, who showed why they are one of the top teams in the National Hockey League.

If the Jets are able to win their remaining five games of the season, they still can only finish with a maximum of 88 points. This means the magic number for the Buffalo Sabres to secure their spot above Winnipeg in the standings is three. If Buffalo is able to achieve three (or more) points in their final five games, OR if Winnipeg drops three (or more) points in their final five games, then the Sabres will knock the Jets out of the race.

The Jets now head on the road to see what kind of miracle they can muster. The road trip begins in Carolina on Friday night before heading down to Tampa Bay and Florida, finally ending against the New York Islanders next Thursday night.

YESTERDAY'S GAMES:

New York Rangers 4, Winnipeg Jets 2

The Jets came out strong last night, scoring two goals to get the 2-0 lead in the second period, but they returned to their early-season selves as they couldn't hold on to the lead. The Rangers scored four unanswered goals to earn their 49th win of the season, pushing the Jets further to the brink.

It's beginning to look like this late-season push is beginning to wear on the team. On Wednesday night the Jets appeared emotionally and physically worn. It's a tough time of year for every team in the NHL, but it looks like the amount of pressure that Winnipeg has been under the last few weeks is finally taking its toll.

TONIGHT'S KEY-MATCH-UPS:

Washington Capitals at Boston Bruins (6:00 PM)

Even with the Buffalo Sabres out of the picture, the Washington Capitals only need four points in their final five games to eliminate the Jets from playoff contention. The struggling Caps are in tough tonight as they face a surging Bruins team that has won their last three games.

Ideal Jets Outcome: Bruins Win
