The Winnipeg Jets live on to fight another playoff battle. With their overtime win last night, combined with the loss by the Buffalo Sabres means the Jets playoff hopes are still alive!
Winnipeg remains in tenth place in the Eastern Conference, now only six points behind Washington and Buffalo. With four games remaining in their schedule, the Jet still need to win all of their remaining games, and hope that Buffalo gains no more than two points, and Washington gains no more than one.
The Jets now need to overcome one of the biggest problems that has plagued them all season long: winning the second of a back-to-back. The test comes in the form of the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night.
YESTERDAY'S GAMES:
Winnipeg Jets 4, Carolina Hurricanes 3 (OT)
Nik Antropov returned to the lineup and opened the scoring for the Jets early in the first period, but the Hurricanes stormed back, scoring three straight. The Jets were able to overcome the two-goal deficit, and thanks to a heroic effort by Andrew Ladd, earned the overtime victory to stay alive.
Pittsburgh Penguins 5, Buffalo Sabres 3
The talented Pittsburgh Penguins were able to hand the Buffalo Sabres their first loss in six games. The Jets playoff hopes not only rely on their own wins, but also the demise of the Sabres and Capitals down the stretch.
TONIGHT'S KEY MATCH-UPS:
Winnipeg Jets at Tampa Bay Lightning (6:00 PM, CBC)
The Jets will need to win the second game of a back-to-back when they face the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night. In ten tries this season the Jets have been unsuccessful in winning the second game, but you know what they say, '11th time is the charm'.
Ideal Jets Outcome: Jets Win!
Buffalo Sabres at Toronto Maple Leafs (6:00 PM)
It seems preposterous at this point to pin your playoff hopes on a win by the Toronto Maple Leafs, but that's exactly what the Jet need on Saturday night. Toronto has slid in the last few games, dropping their last two games by a combined score of 14-1, but there is no time like the present for the Leafs to start turning things around!
Ideal Jets Outcome: Maple Leafs Win
Montreal Canadiens at Washington Capitals (6:00 PM)
The Jets also require some help from the Montreal Canadiens on Saturday night. If the Capitals earn just two points in the standings, they will secure a spot above the Jets and officially eliminate Winnipeg from playoff contention. The Jets will require Washington to not win a single one of their remaining four games.
Ideal Jets Outcome: Canadiens Win.
