Jim Slater named to U.S. Men's National Team
The Winnipeg Jets are proud to announce that Jim Slater has been named to the U.S. Men’s National Team that will compete in the 2012 IIHF Men’s World Championship. The tournament will run from May 4-20 in Helsinki, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.
Slater, 29, moved into a key role for the Jets this season, centering the team’s third-line checking unit with Chris Thorburn and Tanner Glass. Embraced by Winnipeg fans, the line has been affectionately dubbed the GST Line.
In terms of dedication and perseverance, Slater played in a career-high 78 games with the Jets this season. The 2002 first-round draft pick earned 21 points (13G, 8A) along with 42 penalty minutes. Slater was also the recipient of the Staffmax Community Service Award after his first season with the Winnipeg Jets. Slater has played in 449 career NHL games between Atlanta and Winnipeg for 121 career points (60G, 61A) and 322 career penalty minutes.
This will be the third time Slater has represented his country as he played for the United States in the IIHF World Junior Championships in 2002 as well as the IIHF World Championships in 2006.
