Winnipeg Jets’ General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff took to the stage at CONSOL Energy Centre on Friday night and announced defenceman Jacob Trouba as the ninth overall selection at the 2012 NHL Draft. Trouba was congratulated by his family and friends, stepped on to the Draft stage and put on his first Jets jersey.

“Being a part of all this, and finally getting a chance to be drafted in to the NHL is something that everyone dreams of,” remarked Trouba after being selected. “Being drafted by the Jets is pretty awesome because they are such a great hockey city with a lot of tradition, and I’m excited to be a Jet.”

Jacob Trouba has spent the last couple of years honing his skills in the USA development program. The large defenceman shouldn’t be too much of an enigma to Winnipeg hockey fans, who would have seen him play on the silver-medal winning Under-17 Team USA that played in Winnipeg in the winter of 2010-2011. In that tournament, Trouba racked up two goals and seven assists in his five tournament games.

The Rochester, Michigan born defenceman remembered the Winnipeg tournament, “I was there for a week last year for the U-17 Challenge and it was cold. That’s the memory, but it’s a great hockey city, and they pack the building every night.”

The University of Michigan commit helped the United States capture gold after scoring the opening goal of the Gold Medal Game in the 2011 World Under-18 Championship. The defensive-minded Trouba also was a key contributor to the United States’ second-consecutive gold medal in 2012. During the 2012 World Junior Championship, Trouba was the youngest representative for Team USA, posting three assists in six games.

“I learned a lot at all those tournaments,” said Trouba of his international experience. His contact with other highly skilled players made a big impact, “Being around those guys who are some pretty special players, I was just trying to take in as much as I could.”

The Jets’ first round draft pick in 2012 can contribute offensively and defensively, but he has developed reputation of a mean-streak in the defensive zone. Trouba takes his big frame to punish opponents, using punishing hits to defend the zone.

He described his own style of play, “I’m a physical two-way defenceman who is pretty responsible in my own end, but at the same time I can bring an offensive side of the game as well.”

Jacob Trouba has committed to the University of Michigan for next season, and will continue to develop into a quality player for the Winnipeg Jets. “With the style that I play, playing against grown men in the NHL, getting bigger and stronger is something that will really help me.”
