Winnipeg Jets make five selections on Day 2 of 2012 NHL Draft
The Winnipeg Jets today selected five players on the second day of the 2012 NHL Entry Draft, bringing their total number of players drafted this year to six. After selecting Jacob Trouba in Round One on Friday, the Jets selected Lukas Sutter, Scott Kosmachuk, Connor Hellebuyck, Ryan Olsen and Jamie Phillips.
Selected in the second round (39th overall), Lukas Sutter, 18, played in 70 games with the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL last season. In that time he recorded 59 points (28G, 31A) along with 165 penalty minutes.
“We really like the way he plays," said Winnipeg Jets General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff of Sutter. "He provides a lot of sandpaper for us, and in the prospect category he’s someone that is very determined to play. In from the interview process, and with the way he plays, we’re really excited to get him.”
Selected in the third round (70th overall), Scott Kosmachuk, 18, played in 67 games with the Guelph Storm of the OHL last season. In that time he recorded 59 points (30 goals, 29 assists) along with 110 penalty minutes.
“With Scott Kosmachuk we’re really excited to add a player that has a good combination of skill, but is a great character player as well," explained Cheveldayoff. "We see a tremendous upside in his game, really solid person, and to get him were we picked, we feel very fortunate.”
The Jets added Ryan Olsen, another forward, in the sixth round. Selected 160th overall, Olsen, 18, played in 67 games with the Saskatoon Blades of the WHL last season. In that time he recorded 32 points (15 goals, 17 assists) along with 64 penalty minutes.
“With Olsen we’re getting a big centreman that had a really good second half," said the Jets' General Manager. "He’s a 6-foot-3, two-way centreman that our scouts really liked the progression from the beginning to the end of the season.”
Two goaltenders were picked by the Winnipeg Jets, Connor Hellebuyck in the fifth round, and Jamie Phillips in the seventh round. Connor Hellebuyck, 19, played in 53 games with the Odessa Jackalopes of the NAHL last season. He finished with a record of 26-21-5 and a save percentage of 0.930. Jamie Phillips played in 11 games with the Toronto Jr. Canadiens of the OJHL last season, finishing with a record of 4-4-2 and a save percentage of 0.917.
