The Jets score twice in the third period to take a 3-1 victory over the Bruins on Tuesday night.

PRE-GAME NOTES

Last year, the Winnipeg Jets (16-12-2) welcomed the Washington Capitals (12-16-1) to the MTS Centre a total of three times all season. This year, all three visits by the Capitals are condensed into the month of March, including a two-games-in-two-nights set that begins on Thursday. The Jets enter Thursday’s matchup riding a three-game home winning streak in which they have outscored their opponents 11-4. The last time the Jets lost at home was against the Capitals on Mar. 2 (0-3 L). The Jets’ overall record of 6-1-1 in their last eight has propelled them into top spot in the Southeast – good for the third seed in the Eastern Conference. The road team has won both meetings between the clubs this season which also includes a 4-2 Jets win at Verizon Center on Jan. 22.

Starting Lineup: Evander Kane, Olli Jokinen, Antti Miettinen, Dustin Byfuglien, Grant Clitsome and Ondrej Pavelec in net.

FIRST PERIOD

3:06: Troy Brower put the Capitals on the board early after Brooks Laich dished it to him behind the net. Brower carried the puck to the top of the circle and snapped a shot that beat Pavelec five-hole. 1-0 Caps.

16:22: Marcus Johansson made it 2-0 after Alex Ovechkin sent a nice cross-crease pass onto his stick at the back door to finish the play and put it into the open net.

The Not only have the Caps quieted the crowd, they've turned them sour.           @pwilliamsNHL

18:32: James Wright and Steve Olesky dropped the gloves in hopes they'd wake up the silenced MTS crowd. Each player landed a few swings and the fight finished with Wright wrestling Olesky to the ice. Each were awarded five minutes to think about the fight.

Through 20 minutes, the Jets trailed the Caps 2-0. Shots were 10-7 in favour of the visiting Capitals. The Jets were on top in hits, edging the Caps 14-7.

SECOND PERIOD

Amazing that are nine points ahead of Washington in standings but haven't scored a goal against them in 4 1/2 periods           @Ted_Wyman
16:55: Jack Hillen took a tripping penalty, putting the Jets on their first power play of the night. The power play unit set up for a few quality chances but just couldn't solve the penalty killers or Braden Holtby.

Through 40 minutes, the Jets were still looking to get on the scoreboard and were trailing by two. There were only seven total shots in that period, four for the Jets and three for Capitals. Total shots read 13-12 Capitals. The Jets were outhitting the Capitals 29-12 but the Caps held a 16-14 edge in blocked shots.

THIRD PERIOD

1:36: Dustin Byfuglien took the Jets first penalty, giving the Caps an opportunity. The PK unit continued to hold strong as did Pavelec and the Jets shut the door to keep the score 2-0.

8:31: Jets best chance of the period came to Evander Kane and Antti Miettinen on a nice two-on-one rush. Kane sent a nice feed to Miettinen who had nothing but time. He moved the puck to the back hand and was robbed by Holtby and the Jets remained down by a pair.

Braden Holtby made his best save of the net, nice feed by Evander Kane and Antti Miettinen robbed on backhand attempt.            @WiebeSunSports
14:06: Alex Ovechkin made it 3-0 on the power play with Olli Jokinen in the box serving a delay-of-game penalty for Ondrej Pavelec. Nicklas Backstrom found Ovechkin all alone inside the left circle who blasted his 13th of the season past Pavelec.

18:22: Backstrom adds a fourth goal to the tally late in regulation after Ovechkin set him up with a nice one-timer on the point. Backstrom fired a shot on net that bounced off of Derek Meech and trickled into the net. 4-0 Caps.

That's how the story would end, as the Jets fall 4-0 to the Caps Thursday night. The final shots read 25-20 Washington. The two teams will meet again in a rematch tomorrow night at the MTS Centre. Game time is 6pm on CBC.
