RON HAINSEY NAMED NOMINEE FOR\r\nBILL MASTERTON MEMORIAL TROPHY

The Winnipeg Jets are proud to announce that defenseman Ron Hainsey has been named the team’s nominee for the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy, awarded annually by the National Hockey League.

The trophy is awarded to an NHL player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to hockey. The winner of the trophy is selected by all members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association (PHWA) after the regular season. Hainsey was nominated by the PHWA Chapter of Winnipeg.

Hainsey, a 32-year-old native of Bolton, Conn., has played 586 NHL games but only started his full-time NHL days after 244 AHL games in the Montreal Canadiens’ organization. So far this season, Hainsey has played 42 of 43 games for the Winnipeg Jets for 12 assists and is among the NHL’s top six in shots blocked (106).

The Winnipeg chapter’s nomination is also in recognition of Hainsey’s determined efforts on behalf of NHL players during the recent work stoppage. In the chapter’s judgment, his candidacy is strong in all three areas — dedication to the game (including his advocacy on behalf of players), sportsmanship (just 10 PIM this season) and perseverance (a player who paid his dues in the AHL before emerging into an important role, averaging about 23 minutes of ice time per game with the Jets).

He has been a resilient performer, having missed only nine regular-season games in a six-year span until back-to-back shoulder and skate-cut injuries kept him out 26 games during the 2011-12 season.
