2013 NHL Scouting Combine: LIVE BLOG
Follow along with our live coverage from the 2013 NHL Scouting Combine in Toronto as we provide video interviews with top draft-eligible prospects and Jets management.
The NHL Scouting Combine is an annual event where top draft-eligible prospects go through numerous interviews with NHL teams followed by one hour of intense physical testing in front of a room full of media, scouts and NHL management. Winnipegjets.com is on location at the International Centre in Toronto covering the fitness portion of the event on Friday May 31st and Saturday June 1st.
This year, 101 of the top ranked prospects are in attendance at the Combine to test their mental and physical strengths to the test. All 30 NHL teams are allowed to interview as many of the prospects as they'd like for up to 20 minutes. These interviews take place over the course of four days.
After the prospects have completed all of the interviews that they were requested for, they move onto the fitness testing portion of the combine which starts bright and early Friday morning.
72 prospects are divided up into eight groups of nine athletes on the first day. The second day the final group of 29 are divided into four groups. Each group begins the process with weighing in and having their exact height measured. They then make their way through the individual physical tests that include the following:
• Body Fat (Skinfold Measurement)
• Grip Strength
• Push/Pull Strength
• Vertical Jump
• Standing Long Jump
• Bench Press
• Trunk Flexion
• Equilibrium Test
• Jump Training Mat
After the strength testing concludes, the prospects move onto the very challenging and dreadful bike testing. There are two vigorous bike tests to complete: the Wingate Ergometer Test, which is geared to see how much energy a player uses during a 30-second shift, and the VO2 Max Test, which measures a player’s endurance. Think of the anaerobic (Wingate) as a regular shift in a game but the VO2 Max is the entire game as a whole.
The 3 top ranked prospects at the NHL Scouting Combine spoke to the media a day before fitness testing.

It has only been five days since Jonathan Drouin won the Memorial Cup with the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL. The 5'11", 176 lbs, left winger arrived Thursday night and only had to participate in the medical testing portion of the combine.
"We've been playing a lot of hockey, we just got back four days ago," said Drouin. "We didn't want to hurt ourselves, we haven't trained in off-ice stuff in a long time so it was a little dangerous to jump in like that."
Drouin is ranked third in the 2013 NHL Draft Prospects, but it's no secret that he'd love to go first overall.
"Obviously everyone wants to go number one," he said. "It would be a great honour. Colorado is a good team and that's my goal for sure, I want to go number one but whatever happens, happens."
Drouin is coming off an impressive season with the Mooseheads as he led his team with 105 points (41g, 64a) in 49 games.
|Seth Jones- D-Portland Winterhawks|
JT Compher, John Hayden, Marc-Olivier Roy, Jonathan-Ismael Diaby, Spenser Jensen, Steven Santini, Anthony Florentino, Seth Jones, Shea Theodore.
"I just played my last game on Sunday so I didn't have time to train or do anything for this," said Jones. "My body is still worn down, I've been nursing a couple of injuries all year so I didn't think i was really prepare and I had a good talk with my agent about it and he felt the same way."
Jones finished the season with 56 points in 61 games with a plus-46 rating with the 'Hawks this season, good for fourth in defensemen scoring. The level-headed 6'3.5" 205-pound blueliner said he wasn't too concerned where he is picked or who he will play with next season, he's more excited just to be going through the process.
"I mean to be the number one rated player in North America by Central Scouting and it's what you work towards," he said. "Everyone wants to be their best but with that being said, no one knows what the team is thinking, no one knows what the team needs. I'm just going to control what I can control which is trying to develop and get better.
