Jets agree to terms with Grant Clitsome
The Winnipeg Jets are pleased to announce they have agreed to terms with defenceman Grant Clitsome on a new three-year contract. As per club policy, terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
"I think from day one it was a priority for me to get a deal done with Winnipeg," said Clitsome, Wednesday morning. "They took a chance on me when they picked me up on waivers and gave me an opportunity to show that I can play in this league. I really enjoy my time there, I like the coaching staff and management, they've treated me first class the whole way."
Clitsome, 28, played in 44 games with the Winnipeg Jets last season. In that time, the left-handed defenceman recorded 16 points (4G, 12A) and 18 penalty minutes. His plus-10 rating was the highest among all Jets defencemen and he finished second in points on the club’s blueline.
"He's someone who, as the season progressed and started to become tighter and tighter, his game seemed to pick up," said Jets General Manager, Kevin Cheveldayoff in a conference call Wednesday morning.
"In the last 33 games of the season last year, he had 14 points, he was plus 14 and was averaging 21 minutes a night. It was something that as a 28-year-old defenseman, younger than most of the defensemen in free-agency that we had looked at, Grant was a good fit.
"He's a tremendous person, he works very, very hard, he's very physically fit and he's someone we think that as his ice-times and responsibilities continue to grow, his game will continue to grow."
The Gloucester, ON native has appeared in 149 NHL games between Columbus and Winnipeg for 55 career points (13G, 42A) and 72 penalty minutes. Clitsome was originally drafted by the Columbus Blue Jackets in the ninth round, 271st overall, in the 2004 NHL Draft.
