Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation visit Villa Rosa Teaching Garden

The Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation had the pleasure of attending the opening of Villa Rosa's new Outdoor Teaching Garden. Villa Rosa, a United Way Member Agency, was a 2011-2012 grant recipient, receiving $25,000 to help fund the garden. Tucked away in Wolseley along the river, “Villa Rosa’s mission is to provide educational, health and social services to young single women and their families during and after pregnancy, in the Province of Manitoba. Programs are offered in a safe, nurturing environment that encourages personal growth, and carried out in a fiscally responsible, culturally competent manner.”

Looking at Villa Rosa from Wolseley Avenue, you wouldn’t expect it had such a large and beautiful outdoor space. Upon walking into the newly landscaped garden, your eye was immediately drawn to the tipi that was the focal point of the garden. It rose beautifully in the back garden, the canvas hand painted by all the women at Villa Rosa. It will act as a sanctuary for cultural teachings & storytelling. The garden also boasted a new patio with an elegant wooden pergola, complete with seating. Low maintenance plants and trees complimented the new stone gardens and refinished retaining wall. The newly landscaped garden blended well with the huge elm trees and wild flowers that lined the river bank.

The sun shone high and bright as everyone enjoyed a light lunch and was warmly welcomed by the board and staff of Villa Rosa. Three young women, who are current residents at Villa Rosa, spoke about what the new garden will mean to their lives and the lives of their children. After a blessing by two Elders and the air smelt strong of sweet grass, the garden was officially open. The guests were serenaded by a drumming group of residents and teachers, as they finished up their lunches and parted ways. The Outdoor Teaching Garden will surely be a place of learning, peace and memories for its residents and staff for many years to come.

The Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation is proud to support local registered charities that serve Manitoba’s youth such as Villa Rosa.
