Game Recap: Jets vs Sharks

The Winnipeg Jets rookies wrapped up their second game in style tonight, putting seven goals on the board to beat the Edmonton Oilers rookies by a score of 7-2. Both Scott Kosmachuk and tryout player Axel Blomqvist scored twice, while goaltender Eric Comrie made 36 saves to help lift the Jets to their second straight win.

“When you look at the lines I thought there was a pretty good balance,” said Jets’ prospects head coach, Keith McCambridge. “For our defensive guys, they also did a good job of adding to the offense. Overall it was a well-balanced game when you look at goals scored, it’s not just the guy that finishes, it’s the guy with the forecheck that causes the turnover and the defenseman that gaps up the neutral zone.”

Nik Petan didn’t waste much time getting the Jets on the board as he scooped up a loose puck in front of Oilers goaltender Philippe Cadorette and slipped it into the back of the net.

1:11 later, Kosmachuk picked up his second of the tournament after he undressed five Oilers before batting the bobbling puck out of mid-air up and over the Oilers netminder.

Mitchell Theoret widened the gap to 3-0 as he picked up a loose puck in front of the net in the middle of a flurry of jerseys and shoveled it across the line. Josh Morrissey and Petan picked up the assists on the play.

The pace slowed considerably in the second period as the Oilers tried to find some energy to get back in the game. Ryan Olsen put a stop to that when he added a fourth goal to the board midway through the period. Jacob Trouba made a nice pass just in reach for Olsen streaking up the middle. He split the D and tapped it through the legs of Cadorette.

Blomqvist and Kosmachuk added a fifth and sixth goal before the second period expired giving the young Jets a dominating lead heading to the final frame.

Oilers Kyle Platzer found some room at 4:55 of the third period as he blasted a hard shot from the top of the circle that just beat Comrie over the blocker, to make it 6-1.

With three minutes remaining in the game, the Oilers struck again. This time it was Greg Chase with a deflection that went up and over Comrie’s shoulder on the power play.

Blomqvist took back the goal after he made a nice steal right in front of the Oilers net with less than two to play in the game to seal the 7-2 victory.

The Jets play their third and final game against the Vancouver Canucks rookies on Monday afternoon. Game time is 1:30 pm CST.
