The St. John’s IceCaps were downed 4-2 by the Albany Devils in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference Quarterfinal series at the Times Union Center in Albany, NY. With the win, the Devils tied the best-of-five series at one apiece.

The IceCaps found themselves in penalty trouble all game and the Devils capitalized, going 3-for-9 on the power play. Despite firing a ton of rubber in the third period, the IceCaps could not solve Albany goaltender Keith Kinkaid, who turned aside all 20 shots he faced in the frame and finished with 30 saves in total.

Brenden Kichton scored both goals for St. John’s, while Michael Hutchinson stopped 30-of-34.

The IceCaps opened the scoring for the second straight game as Kichton got his team on the board at 10:10. Joining the rush, Kichton took a pass from John Albert and got off a shot that was initially stopped, but the puck bounced off a Devils’ skate and beat Kinkaid to make it 1-0.

The Devils wasted no time evening the score, as Reid Boucher tied things up less than a minute later. Boucher picked off a pass in front of the IceCaps net and beat Hutchinson under the arm to make it a 1-1 game.

Albany pulled ahead late in the first on the power play as Stefan Matteau made it 2-1. Matteau took a feed in front and got two cracks at it before beating Hutchinson on the rebound.

On a power play in the second period, Kichton notched his second of the game to tie the game at two. Zach Redmond made a beautiful feed to the rookie blueliner, who got in behind the defence and beat Kinkaid over his left shoulder.

The see-saw battle continued later in the frame as Mattias Tedenby gave the Devils a 3-2 lead. On the power play, Tedenby took the feed from Zajac off the rush, settled the puck and beat Hutchinson between the legs at the 8:08 mark.

Scott Timmins provided insurance midway through the third on yet another power play when he got a piece of Mike Sislo’s shot, making it 4-2.

The IceCaps had a chance late in the period on a 5-on-3 man advantage for 1:24 but could not convert, as Kinkaid came up with several big saves to stymie the St. John’s power play unit.

The teams now head to St. John’s for Game 3 Wednesday night at Mile One Centre (7:30 p.m. NT). Catch all the action with broadcaster Brian Rogers on Rogers TV, Eastlink TV and AHL Live, or listen at www.stjohnsicecaps.com and 930AM. Pregame show begins at 7:00.
