Jets blown over by Canes

The Jets head to New York for their last game before the NHL All-Star break. The team will take on the Rangers for the third time this season Tuesday night. Watch the game on TSN Jets or listen to TSN Radio 1290. Game time is 6:00 PM.
Jeff Skinner and Tim Brent scored for the Carolina Hurricanes in the first period which is all they needed, as the Winnipeg Jets drop a heart-breaker in Carolina by a score of 2-1 Monday night.
closed the gap for the Jets scoring in the second period as he extended his point streak to five games.
The Jets came out with a tremendous effort in the third period as they outshot the Canes 14-2, but the brilliant play of Canes netminder Cam Ward proved to be the key in the game.
Tomorrow will not be any easier for the Jets as they travel to New York to take on the Rangers in a Tuesday night matchup. Puck drops at 6:00 pm on TSN Jets.
Carolina got on the board first and just 3:55 into the game. Jeff Skinner scooped up the puck in the neutral zone and raced in on Chris Mason
. He went to pass the puck for a tic-tac-toe play but the puck bounced off of the Jets defender and right back to his stick. With Mason on the other side of his net, Skinner made no mistake finishing what he started. 1-0 Canes.
Tim Brent puts the Hurricanes up 2-0 as he dug the puck out of the corner in the Jets zone, stealing the puck from Zach Bogosian
. Brent quickly snapped a shot on a sharp angle that just beat Mason at 9:28.
That's all that would count in the opening period as the Jets head to the dressing room down by a pair. After twenty minutes, shots were 7-6 in favour of the Hurricanes.
The Jets were handed their second power play chance of the night at 6:36 of the second period as Jussi Jokinen was sent to the box for tripping. The power play unit had a couple chances on the advantage but for the second time tonight, they could not solve Cam Ward and the Hurricanes penalty kill.

connected with Wellwood with a nice cross-ice pass from the top of the circle. From down on one knee, Wellwood finishes the play to close the gap to 2-1. His goal sets a career high five-game point streak for Wellwood.
After two periods of play, the Jets trailed 2-1 but led 16-14 in shots.
It was all Jets through the first half of the final period as the held the Hurricanes off the shot clock for the last 14 minutes of play. They outshot the Canes 11-0 through the first 10 minutes.
They did everything right except for find the back of the net and solve Ward and his posts. Even Burmistrov, who had a glorious shorthanded opportunity was robbed by Ward.
At the two minute mark, Wellwood was given a beautiful breakaway opportunity as he split his d-men and forced Ward to go down into a two-pad stack position . Wellwood's shot just missed as it flew over top of the cross-bar and the game continued.
The Jets hammered away at Ward for the remaining minutes but no pucks were able to break through to tie the game. Time expired in regulation and the Canes held on to their 2-1 lead to scoop up the two points. In the final frame alone, the Jets outshot the Canes 14-2.
