The Winnipeg Jets were in Boston for their first road game of the season and an exciting one it was.
Chris Thorburn opened the scoring early scoring his first of the season at 1:58 of the opening frame. Brad Marchand would answer back to tie the game 1-1 for the Bruins later in the opening period. That's how the score looked after 65 minutes of play as it took a shootout to determine a winner.
Blake Wheeler was the only Jet to score on Tuukka Rask in the shootout, giving the Boston Bruins the extra point after Bryan Little rang his shot off the post.
The shots were 27-27 after overtime.
The Jets will jump back on their plane and head to Washington to play the Capitals Tuesday night.
FIRST PERIOD
The Jets opened the scoring just 1:58 into the game, thanks to a goal by Chris Thorburn. Paul Postma blasted a hard shot from the point that was spit out by Tuukka Rask right onto the stick of Thorburn, who made no mistake sending it to the back of the net to give the Jets a 1-0 lead.
Kyle Wellwood had an excellent chance to put another on the board midway through the first period as Evander Kane sent a nice feed onto his stick a stepping up for a breakaway. Wellwood raced down the ice and put a nice shot on net but Rask made the save to keep the game at 1-0.
Brad Marchand tied the game for the Bruins after capitalizing on a Jets turnover at the blueline. Tyler Seguin snatched the puck and charged the net with Marchand along with him to take the pass in front of the net and squeeze it past Pavelec. 1-1 at 14:12.
After twenty minutes, the Jets and Bruins were tied with shots at 12-11 Bruins.
SECOND PERIOD
David Krejci took the game's first penalty as he was caught for high sticking on Kane just 1:27 into the frame. The Jets managed to set up a couple of times on the power play but were not able to get anything past Rask and the game continued tied.
Minutes after the Krejci penalty expired, Andrew Ference was called for tripping after hauling down Olli Jokinen, and the Jets went back on the power play. Jokinen had the best chance of the advantage after he had a bouncing puck jump over his stick at the right post with an open net in front of him.
The Bruins turned on their game late in the second period with a handful of chances to go up on the Jets. Two shots rang off of Pavelec's post in a 40 second span, keeping the game tied at 1-1. Although Pavelec was clearly getting some help from his posts, he was able to keep his Jets even. With 1:40 seconds remaining in the period, Stuart took the Jets first penalty going off for interference. Pavelec and the Jets were able to kill off that 1:40 and head to the dressing room still tied.
Shots after two periods were 18-15 Boston. Boston won 26 of 43 faceoffs and out-hit Jets 30-22
THIRD PERIOD
As posts continue to be a popular thing in this game, Paul Postma found one of his own as he blasted a shot from the point that rang off the post and came right back to the blueline. The constant ringing of the post kept the game tied 1-1 midway through the third period.
The Jets went back on the penalty kill after Kane was called for goaltender interference at 12:31. The Bruins rang yet another shot off the post and had a few good chances to go up on the Jets but the game remained tied.
With 1:11 remaining on the clock, Johnny Boychuk got caught for high-sticking on Bryan Little sending the Jets on one last power play. They came very close as Ron Hainsey sent a hard shot on net from the point but the puck changed direction and missed the net. The Jets banged away at it trying to wrap it in but they ran out of time. The Jets took the point and moved to overtime.
OVERTIME
The Jets were handed one more chance on the power play with Zdeno Chara off to the box with 1:28 to play in overtime. They mustered up a pair of shots on the man advantage but again ran out of time and the game would have to be decided in a shootout.
