Although the Hurricanes came out fast and furious scoring two early goals, the Jets found their legs and marched to an exciting 5-3 victory over Carolina on Saturday night.

Chris Mason who replaced Ondrej Pavelec early, brought his 'A' game tonight playing 11:40 shorthanded minutes, stopping 18 of 19 shots thrown his way earning himself the first star of the game.

Power play goals from Alexander Burmistrov and Kyle Wellwood tied the game in the dying seconds of the first period and the goals didn't stop there.

Jim Slater, Andrew Ladd and Evander Kane would each tally a goal in the middle frame to help secure the Jets' second win of the season.

The Jets will enjoy the victory tonight and move on tomorrow as they prepare for the visiting New York Rangers on Monday night.

Carolina found their way onto the board early as Jussi Jokinen managed to push the puck past Pavelec to give the 'Canes a 1-0 lead at 3:40. Pavelec thought he had the puck under his pad but the late whistle resulted in the goal light turning on.

Momentum carried for the Hurricanes as a scramble in front of the net resulted in another ugly goal for the visitors. Jeff Skinner was credited with the goal. The Jets couldn't find a way to clear the puck out of harms way before it made it's way to the back of the net. The play was reviewed however the call on the ice stood and just like that, the Jets trailed by a pair.

Pavelec made a quick exit as Coach Claude Noel decided to give Chris Mason a go.

The Jets weren't going to give up that quickly as Alex Burmistrov was able to narrow the gap on the power play at 12:22. Zach Bogosian fired a hard point shot that Boucher turned aside. Burmistrov was able to get his wood on the rebound and snap one past Boucher from inside the right circle. 2-1 'Canes.

The powerplay success continued as Kyle Wellwood tied the game just two seconds to play in the period. Antropov took a shot that was kicked away by Boucher but he was able to scoop up the rebound and dish it off to Wellwood who was wide open in the left slot. Wellwood made no mistake to throw it into the yawning cage picking up his third goal of the seasaon.  2-2 tie going into the first intermission. The Jets led on the shot clock 13-6 after 20 minutes of play.

The Jets kept the pressure on and carried the momentum into the second period. Jim Slater carried the puck across the blueline into the 'Canes zone with Tanner Glass with him on the play. Slater wound up and wired a slap shot right on target and right past Boucher's shoulder to give the Jets a 3-2 lead at 4:29.

Less than two minutes later, Andrew Ladd widened the gap netting a slap shot of his own from just inside the blueline on the left wing picking up his second of the season. Blake Wheeler and Bogosian picked up the helpers at 6:07.

The flood gates opened up for Jets scoring as Evander Kane made it 5-2 at 7:30, just 1:23 after Ladd's goal. Antropov snatched up a loose puck behind the net and was able to using his body and send a nifty pass onto the tape of Kane who was waiting just to the right of Boucher's crease. Kane threw a sharp wrist shot past Boucher for his first goal of the season.

After 40 minutes of play, the Jets led 5-2 and led 19-12 on the shot clock.

The 'Canes were able to slow the pace for the first ten minutes of the third period. They weren't going away as they turned up the pressure on the Jets as play continued- which paid off.

Tuomo Ruutu picked up the 'Canes third goal of the night as he picked up a nice pass from Jeff Skinner in front of Mason and fired a snap shot over his shoulder and into the net at 8:58.

Carolina kept digging as they went to the power play after Stuart got caught for hooking just 20 seconds after the goal. The surging 'Canes tried everything they could on the man-advantage but Mason stood on his head making huge saves to keep the Jets up by two.

The Jets penalty kill was tested to the max in the later half of the final period as they were forced to kill off a 5-on-3 for 1:44 seconds followed by another minor immediately after. Mason was on his game stopping everything thrown his way trying to hold onto the 5-3 lead.

The 'Canes picked up 12 shots on goal in the third period to the Jets five but couldn't solve Mason and the Jets penalty kill.

Time ran down on the third period as the Jets prevailed to an exciting 5-3 victory. They will have tomorrow off to prepare to host the New York Rangers Monday night. Game time is 7:30 pm on TSN- JETS.
