JETS DROP FLYERS 6-4

Kristi Hennessy  - Coordinator, Web Content | Wednesday, 08.06.2014 / 4:52 AM

Three power play goals and a shorthanded goal proved to be the key tonight as the Winnipeg Jets defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 6-4 at the MTS Centre.

Bryan Little tallied the first two goals for the Jets just 2:15 apart in the first period. Andrew Ladd, Dustin Byfuglien and Jim Slater each contributed goals in the victory as the Jets complete the sweep of their three game homestand.

Ondrej Pavelec stopped 27 of 31 shots on net tonight while Sergei Bobrovsky turned away 35 of the 40 shots he faced.

FIRST PERIOD

Special teams continue to be a key factor as Bryan Little got the Jets on the board on the power play just 4:45 into the first period. Evander Kane started the play with a nice cross-ice feed for Dustin Byfuglien. Byfuglien blasted a slap shot from the point that Sergei Bobrovsky kicked aside. Little was there in the crease to send home the rebound to make it 1-0 Jets.

Less than three minutes later, Little picked up his second of the game and fourth of the season. Blake Wheeler dished the puck out of the corner over to Little who fired the puck over the shoulder of Bobrovsky beating him high glove side to make it 2-0 early. Byfuglien was credited with the second assist on the play.

The power play success continued as Andrew Ladd added another goal at 10:15 with Chris Pronger in the box for slashing. Kyle Wellwood picked up a rebound from Byfuglien's shot from the point and was able to send a nifty pass on his backhand over to Ladd to the left of Bobrovsky. Ladd made no mistake finishing the tic-tac-toe play making it 3-0 Jets just halfway through the first period.

The Flyers answered back on their first power play of the afternoon as Chris Pronger blasted a one-timer past a perfect screen in front and over the glove of Pavelec. 3-1 Jets with just over six minutes to play in the period.

After 20 minutes, the Jets were up 3-1 and up 17-8 on the shot clock.

SECOND PERIOD

The bounces kept coming for the Jets as Jim Slater picked up a short handed goal just 5:49 into the second period. Chris Pronger couldn't keep the puck inside the zone at the blue line and Slater was there to pounce on the loose puck and race up ice. He blasted a wrist shot beating Bobrovsky top shelf to make it 4-1 Jets.

Byfuglien widened the gap to 5-1 on a 5-on-3 opportunity at the midway marker of the middle frame. The Jets special team cycled the puck around the Flyers zone looking for an opening. Ladd got the puck to Byfuglien who fired a shot from a tough angle that somehow squeaked past Bobrovsky and into the back of the net.

Scott Hartnell picked up the Flyers second goal of the day on the power play with Tanner Glass in the box for delay of game. Danny Briere and Chris Pronger picked up the helpers. 5-2 Jets, with four minutes to play in the period.

The Flyers did put another puck over the goal line but it was a split second too late as time had just expired on the second period and the goal did not count. After two periods, the Jets were still on top 5-2.

THIRD PERIOD

Matt Read cut the lead to 5-3 for the Flyers at 8:32 of the final period. Hartnell sent a nice pass over to Read in the slot who blasted a slap shot that sailed over Pavelec's shoulder top shelf.

Things weren't quite over yet as Read found the back of the net again for the Flyers tightening the score to 5-4 with 2:14 left in regulation. Claude Giroux fed Read a nice cross-ice pass, Read stickhandled his way around his defenders and fired a shot past Pavelec on his stick side.

The Flyers called a timeout with 1:45 left on the clock and down by one goal. They pulled Bobrovsky to add the extra attacker to try to tie the game.

Nik Antropov won the faceoff in the neutral zone and fired the puck from centre all the way down the ice and into the empty net to seal the deal at 6-4.

The Jets finish the sweep of their three game homestand against the Philadelphia Flyers and will now hit the road for three games starting in Washington Wednesday night. Game time is 6:00 pm on TSN-Jets or listen to it on TSN Radio 1290.
