Jets 4, Devils 2- Final

Kristi Hennessy  - Coordinator, Web Content | Wednesday, 08.06.2014 / 4:52 AM

Evander Kane tallied another two goals tonight against the New Jersey Devils but this time the result was a little better, as the Jets downed the Devils 4-2 on Saturday night.

Alexander Burmistrov and Mark Stuart each contributed goals in the win and Ondrej Pavelec was excellent again in net stopping 23 of 25 shots.

The Jets improve to a 500 record with the back-to-back wins and will next look to welcome the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night. The Bruins took the first of the season series last Saturday in Boston by a score of 4-2.

Puck drops at 7:30 pm on TSN Jets or on TSN Radio 1290..

FIRST PERIOD

The Jets kicked things off with energy and determination. Evander Kane didn't waste any time getting on the scoreboard with a perfect redirection from Dustin Byfuglien's shot from the point that stunned Johan Hedberg. Byfuglien's assist on the play was his 100th career assist. Kane has scored first for the Jets in five games this season, four of those were the first of the game.

1-0 Jets just 1:42 into the first period.

The Devils tied things up at 5:53 as Adam Henrique snapped the puck past Pavelec just inside the right goal post. Ilya Kovalchuk raced through the neutral zone, passed up to Zach Parise who found Henrique on his right, wide open. Just like that, the game was tied 1-1.

Jim Slater took the game's first penalty with 1:17 left in the first period for slashing but the period would expire before the penalty would and the game was still tied.

After 20 minutes, the Jets led 7-5 on the shotclock.

SECOND PERIOD

Through the first half of the second period, the Devils had a tad more pressure and a few more chances than the home team. A big reason for that was that the period opened with Slater in the box, and later Chris Thorburn sat for two minutes. The Devils had nine shots to the Jets two through ten minutes.

Penalty woes returned late in the second period as the Jets found themselves down two men for 1:46. Patrick Elias got on the board on the two-man advantage at 17:17 of the second frame.

The Jets wouldn't have any of it as Alex Burmistrov quickly tied the game shorthanded just 1:07 later. It all started when Hedberg coughed up the puck to Bryan Little who made a quick turn around and sent a nice cross-ice pass to Burmistrov who made no mistake firing the tying goal past Hedberg.

The second period came to an end with the Devils on top of the shot clock 18-13, but the two teams knotted at two.

THIRD PERIOD

Things heated up early in the third period. Jason Jaffray and Tim Sestito collided near the benches just over four minutes in, which turned into the game's first fight. Each earned five minutes for fighting but created energy on the bench and in the building.

Later in the period, Mark Stuart put the Jets on top as he barged his way into the Devils zone and went hard to the net. Hedberg made the initial save but the puck was still loose and somehow was pushed across the goal line and into the white paint. Stuart's second of the season was assisted by Wheeler and Bogosian. Jets up 3-2 with 6:47 to play in regulation.

Kane sealed the deal netting his second of the game whipping the puck down the ice into the empty net to make it 4-2 with 32 seconds left in regulation.

4-2 ended up to be the final tonight as the Jets move to 500 with solid back-to-back wins. They look next to the Boston Bruins in town on Tuesday night.
