It took 58:46 minutes of play for a goal to be scored between the Capitals and the Jets and unfortunately for the home team, it was the Capitals on the winning side of things.
Alex Ovechkin tallied the game's only goal with 76 seconds left on the clock after the Jets turned over the puck in the neutral zone. Ovechkin made no mistake as he fired it through the legs of Pavelec to give the Caps the go-ahead goal.
The Jets will have to brush that one off and move on to their next opponent, the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night. Game time is 6:00 pm on CBC.
The Jets came out physical in the first half of the opening period throwing their bodies all over the ice. At the midway mark, they had nine hits to the Capitals two.
The Caps took the first penalty of the night as Mike Knuble got caught for high-sticking but the Jets couldn't convert a goal on the power play.
After a fairly slow first period, the Jets led 14-7 on the shot clock and led 11-5 in the hits category.
The second period was just as physical but still no numbers went up on the scoreboard. After two periods, the Jets led 20-9 in hits and 22-19 in total shots.
The Jets also led 11-10 in blocked shots.
Slow and steady continued to be the story as the game continued into the final frame. Both teams were fairly disciplined as each team only took one penalty each. Neither team was able to capitalize on the man advantage and the game was still scoreless with less than five minutes to play on the board.
Pavelec was tested with under four minutes left as he slid across his net just in time to rob Jason Chimera and keep the game scoreless.
The Capitals finally found the first goal of the game as Alex Ovechkin buried one with 1:14 left in regulation to put the Caps on top 1-0.
That's how that one would end as the Jets couldn't answer back and tie the game in the 76 seconds that remained in the game.
