Jets Wheel for a point but Blues win in shootout

The Jets hosted the St. Louis Blues at the MTS Centre Saturday afternoon, a team they only play once this season. The shots on goal were 41-16 in favour of the home team. The shots were indicative of the game that the Jets played however, the story didn't have a fairytale ending as the Blues left the building with a shootout victory.

The Blues went up 2-0 in the first period with goals from David and David Perron on just six shots in the first twenty minutes. (to the Jets 16)

The Jets battled back in the second period as Blake Wheeler scored twice to tie the game with Dustin Byfuglien assisting on both goals.

No goals through the third period which forced overtime but that wasn't enough either. The shootout went through a eight shooters before the Blues took the extra point.

The Jets will have a day off before they take on the Edmonton Oilers Monday night. Puck drops at 7:30pm.

David Backes put the Blues on the board first at 7:43 of the first period. T.J Oshie attempted to sneak the puck in on a wrap-around play but Mason kicked it away. Unfortunately, Backes was right in the slot to send the puck into the open net. 1-0 Blues.

With under a minute to play in the period, the David Perron tallied another goal for the Blues. Patrik Berglund got a handle on a bouncing puck along the boards and sent a nice pass to the front of the net for Perron. Mason went down and he shot high into the open net. Oshie picked up his second helper of the day on the goal.

After twenty minutes, the Blues were on top 2-0 but the Jets led 16-6 on the shot clock.

Alexander Burmistrov took the game's first penalty as he was called for hooking at 4:49 of the second but the penalty-killing unit was able to kill of a strong Blues power play.

Moments after the penalty expired, Blake Wheeler narrowed the gap for the Jets knocking in a rebound from Evander Kane's shot from the left circle. Halak kicked away the shot with his left foot but sent the rebound right onto Wheeler's stick and into the net it went. 2-1 Blues.

The Jets got their first power play of the day at 8:43 with Ryan Reaves going to the box for tripping. The power play did an excellent job of shooting, creating scoring chances and cycling the puck but failed to convert on the advantage. They headed right back on the power play as the Blues were called for too many men.

They were not able to tally on the team penalty either however, they kept the pressure on and the hard work finally paid off with Wheeler netting his second of the game to tie things up 2-2. Dustin Byfuglien blasted a shot from inside the circle that Halak stopped but spit out another rebound. This time Ladd got his stick on it and gave it to Wheeler to finish the play and send the puck up and over Halak. With his second goal of the day, Wheeler moves to 51 points as a Jet this season.

After two periods of play, the Jets and Blues were tied 2-2 with the Jets on top 33-10 in shots.

Both the Jets and the Blues elevated their play in the third period pushing to find the go-ahead goal. But as the Jets hit 40 shots to the Blues 14, the two were still knotted at two with seven minutes left in regulation.

Both teams were disciplined as there were no penalties in the third period.

Time ran out in regulation to force overtime. The Jets and Blues each took out a point and battled it out in extra time for the second point.

OT-Nothing was solved in the extra five minutes so a shootout was required to determine the winner.
