Jets grounded by a Hurricane

The Jets tried to match the emotion and intensity they had on Friday night but things didn't exactly go as planned. They came back after being down twice in the game and even took a lead late in the second period, but two unanswered goals in the third period saw the Jets fall to the Hurricanes 4-3 Sunday night.

Antti Miettinen picked up his first and second goals of the season in the second period tonight putting the Jets up by a goal heading into the third period. A costly giveaway to Eric Staal on a breakaway tied the game midway through the third period and Chad Larose finished things off with 1:22 left on the clock to take the 4-3 victory.

The Jets will have a travel day tomorrow as they embark on their three-game road trip starting with the Penguins on Tuesday night. Puck drops at 6:00pm on TSN Jets in Pittsburgh.

The game's first penalty of the night went to Jussi Jokinen just over four minutes into the first period as he went off for slashing. Although the power play unit was able to create a couple good scoring chances, they couldn't solve Cam Ward.

Minutes later with Derek Joslin in the box, the Hurricanes picked up their 11th shorthanded goal of the season. The Jets had won the faceoff but after a battle along the boards, Jokinen ended up with it and raced into the Jets zone. He beat his defender and fooled Pavelec to give the Canes a 1-0 lead.

Nik Antropov tied things up at 11:41 as he chipped in a bouncing backhander past Ward for this third goal in three games. Tim Stapleton and Mark Stuart picked up the helpers on the Jets first goal of the night.

Blake Wheeler took the first Jets penalty of the evening and less than a minute later, Alex Burmistrov went off for boarding putting the Jets down two men for 66 seconds. The Canes were able to get a few shots through traffic but Pavelec and the penalty kill shut them down keeping the game tied.

After twenty minutes of play, the game remained 1-1 and the Jets led 12-7 in shots on goal.

Mark Stuart took an interference minor at 5:21 of the second period and the Hurricanes capitalized on the opportunity to go up 2-1. Eric Stall wired a wrister from the top of the circle that flew through a screen and over the shoulder of Pavelec.

Minutes later Spencer Machacek dropped the gloves with Patrick Dwyer after he wacked Toby Enstrom on the side of the face with his stick.

Just over the midway mark of the period, Antti Miettinen picked up his first goal of the season, and what a timely goal it was just, as a power play was expiring. Jim Slater set up the play as he banked a pass off the boards to Evander Kane on the blueline. Kane blasted a slap shot that Miettinen redirected perfectly through Ward and into the net to tie the game.

12 seconds later, Zach Bogosian laid out Andreas Nodl along the boards sending him off his feet and onto the ice. Unfortunately, his physical play earned him a five minute major for charging and a game misconduct.

Miettinen picked up his second of the game and second of the season with just 1:06 left in the period. Miettinen and Machacek played give-and-go as they raced across the blueline charging the net. Machacek sent the puck back onto Miettinen's stick  on the left wing and he finished the tic-tac-toe play to send the Jets up 3-2.

With two periods in the books, the Jets led 3-2 and the shots were 19-16.

Eric Staal picked up his second of the game and 21st of the season at 10:24 of the final frame to tie things up. Jokinen stole the puck away from the Jets in the Hurricanes zone and dished it off to Staal who was already on a partial breakaway. Staal got set up and snapped one top-shelf on Pavelec stick-side from the top of the circle.

Both teams were much more disciplined in the third period as neither team took penalties through 18 minutes of the final period. Both teams were getting great chances but just not able to find the back of the net and with under two minutes left, the game was still tied.

The Hurricanes took the lead with just over a minute remaining in regulation as Chad Larose put one past Pavelec after Staal found him at centre ice. 4-3 Canes.

That's how things would end in this one as the Jets fall to the Canes late in the game. They head on the road for three games starting in Pittsburgh Tuesday night.
