Jets 4, Senators 6

It was an emotional roller-coaster for the full 60 minutes tonight, but when the buzzer went, the Jets were not left at the top of the hill, as they dropped to the Ottawa Senators 6-4, late in the third period.

Chris Neil opened the scoring and Ottawa led 1-0 after twenty minutes, but five goals were scored in the second period, including two from Antti Miettinen, and we went to the third all tied up 3-3.

The Jets trailed by a goal with three minutes left in regulation when Evander Kane tied things up yet again, raising the roof at the MTS Centre. Daniel Alfredsson answered right back the very next shift, picking up his second goal of the period to regain the lead and secure a win.

Ondrej Pavelec stopped 29 of 34 shots on net while Craig Anderson 44 of 48 to earn the third star of the night.

The Jets are right back in action on Wednesday night against the Eastern Conference leading NY Rangers. Catch that game at 6:00 pm on TSN or listen on TSN Radio 1290.

Alexander Burmistrov took the game's first penalty at 1:48 as he would sit for two minutes for boarding. The Sens best chance on the power play was a slap shot from Daniel Alfredsson from inside the circle, but Pavelec reached out the length of the net and made a nice glove save to stop the play and keep the game scoreless.

The Jets were given their first chance on the man advantage with just over five minutes to play in the period as Sergei Gonchar went to the box for tripping. The Jets were able to get things set up on the power play but couldn't solve Craig Anderson.

Chris Neil got the Senators on the board with 25.6 seconds left in the period as he tipped home a sharp-angle shot from Jason Spezza. Spezza carried the puck through the right circle and waited until the very last second to release a shot from the goal line that bounced off Pavelec's arm and up behind him. Neil was on the other side to put it into the net.

After twenty minutes, the Sens led 1-0 but the Jets had the edge 13-10 in shots.

Kaspars Daugavins put the Senators up just 1:53 into the second period after a Jets turnover in the neutral zone. Erik Condra found Daugavins who made his way to the slot and snapped one past Pavelec.

Antti Miettinen answered back quickly for the Jets putting them on the board at 3:02. Zach Bogosian blasted a slap shot from the point that Anderson saved but it spit out and onto Miettinen's stick, who sent the rebound into the back of the net. 2-1 Sens.

Kyle Wellwood tied the game at 6:54 as Evander Kane looped in behind the net and fired a nice cross-crease pass over to Wellwood in the circle. Wellwood waited for Anderson to go down and he unleashed a wrist shot into the open net.

Kyle Turris put the Sens up 3-2 at 17:26 after a nifty play by Jason Spezza to find him open down low. Spezza took a feed from Karlsson and carried it across the blue-line, stick-handled around his defender and fired the puck through the crease to Turris to finish the play.

Miettinen answered right back for the Jets picking up his second of the game just 20 seconds later. Anderson fumbled the puck behind the net and Jim Slater was there to steal it away and feed Miettinen in front who made it look easy putting it away. 3-3.

After two periods, the game was all tied up 3-3 and the Jets were on top of the shot clock, 30-21.

It was an intense start to the third period as Kyle Wellwood was hooked on a breakaway and was given a penalty-shot 1:34 into the third. He broke in alone, deked to the right but Anderson read the play perfectly, waited him out, and shut the door to keep the game tied.

Alfredsson got the go-ahead goal at 2:54 after another Jets turnover in their own zone. Karlsson intercepted the attempted pass through the slot and dished it off to Alfredsson to put it past Pavelec.

The Jets put the pressure on hard as the period went on- playing to keep their playoff hopes alive. With three minutes on the clock, Evander Kane tied things up after Wellwood went hard to the net and Kane snuck in there and pushed the puck into the net over the shoulder of Anderson.

Alfredsson regained the one goal lead 24 seconds later as the Sens collapsed the net and found a way to put it past Pavelec. Flip Kuba took the initial shot and Alfredsson picked up the rebound to go up 5-4.

Milan Michalek added an empty net insurance goal to seal the victory for Ottawa at 19:26.

The Jets will have to forget the disappointing loss quickly as they look next to the NY Rangers who come into town on Wednesday night.
