The Jets picked up their first win of the season tonight as they marched into Washington and took a convincing two points from the Capitals with a 4-2 victory.
Matt Hendricks opened the scoring for the Capitals at 10:02 of the first period, but Evander Kane answered back two minutes later to tie the game on the power play. Andrew Ladd added another power play goal before the period was done, giving the Jets a 2-1 lead.
Troy Brouwer would add one more to the Capitals score, but they came up short and the Winnipeg Jets took the game 4-2. Final shots were 39-34 Jets.
The Jets will return back to the MTS Centre for a pair of games starting with the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday followed by the NY Islanders on Sunday.
The Capitals opened the scoring as Matt Hendricks took a perfect feed from Backstrom. The goal was reviewed but the goal would stand as video showed that the puck deflected off of his foot, off his stick and into the net. 1-0 Capitals at 10:02.
Joel Ward took the game's first penalty of the game as he head off for tripping at 11:40 of the period. With six seconds remaining in the man advantage, Evander Kane found the back of the net from a tough angle along the goal line. His shot looked to be intended for Olli Jokinen but instead went off of John Carlson's skate and into the back of the net.
Two minutes later, the Capitals took a delay of game penalty putting the Jets back on the power play. Again, with seconds remaining on the penalty, Andrew Ladd found his first of the season tallying the Jets second power play goal of the period. Tobias Enstrom started the play cycling to Nik Antropov. Antropov made a perfect feed to Ladd who blasted a slapshot that went in short side on Braden Holtby. 2-1 Jets after 20 minutes of play. Shots were13-8 Jets.
The first half of the second period was a little less eventful, yet still kept up a fairly good pace. With 9:28 to play in the period, Dustin Byfuglien took the Jets first penalty of the night, as he went off for tripping. The home team managed a couple of shots on net but the Jets were successful keeping the Caps off the board and held onto the lead.
A few minutes later, at 14:32 Blake Wheeler notched a goal of his own adding to the Jets lead. Enstrom started the play handing the puck to Kane to race up ice. He beat his Carlson along the boards and made a nice crisp pass onto the stick of Wheeler on the right side, who snapped one past Holtby.
With 46 seconds remaining in the second period, Jim Slater added a fourth goal to the board. Byfuglien blasted a slap shot from the right point and Slater got his stick on it for a nice deflection past Holtby to make it 4-1 heading into the intermission. Enstrom picked up his third assist of the night on the goal. Capitals Hendricks and Slater dropped the gloves as the seconds counted down on the period and both will get fighting majors to start the third.
Shots after 40 minutes were 33-17 Jets.
Just 1:27 into the final frame, Byfuglien got his stick too high behind the net sending him to the box. 35 seconds later, Troy Brouwer took an interference penalty in front of the net ending their man advantage.
The Jets had to kill of another penalty near the midway mark of the final frame as Jokinen was called for slashing. Pavelec had to make a big save on that penalty kill as Alex Ovechkin blasted a hard shot on net from inside the left blueline. Pavelec closed the door and the game remained 4-1.
Minutes after the penalty expired, Hendricks and Chris Thorburn dropped the gloves in a pretty even fight, each head off for fighting majors.
With just over two minutes to play in regulation, Alexander Burmistrov went to the box for slashing, putting the Capitals back on the power play. Mike Ribeiro started the play that led to the Caps second goal of the night as he fed Brouwer from behind the net to make it 4-2 Jets.
