19 blocked shots by the Jets and 34 saves by Ondrej Pavelec proved to be the difference tonight as the Jets blanked the Islanders 3-0 in New York Thursday night.
Evander Kane tallied the first goal for Winnipeg early in the opening period and the Jets were able to hold on to the 1-0 lead for most of the game until Johnny Oduya added some insurance late in the third period.
Some bad news for the depleted Jets blueline as Randy Jones left the game in the third period after blocking a shot with his right foot and did not return to the lineup.
The Jets kept battling through with just five d-men on the bench to shut the door on the Isles. Alexander Burmistrov sealed the deal netting an empty net goal with two minutes to play in regulation.
The Jets will look to take on the NJ Devils next on Saturday night. Game time is 6:00 pm on CBC or on TSN Radio-1290.
Evander Kane was able to draw first blood for the Jets as he dangled past his Manitoban defenceman Travis Hamonic, around another three Islanders jerseys and right to the front of the net. He took two shots on net before finally backhanding his third attempt into the back of the net to put his team up 1-0 at 4:21 of the first.
Kane got another break a few minutes later as he was hooked on a breakaway by Hamonic and handed a penalty shot. Kane was able to beat Isles netminder Rick Dipietro, but blasted one off the short-side post.
Hamonic and Kane continued their battle as they dropped the gloves with 17 seconds remaining in the period. 9-8 were the shots in favour of the Islanders after 20 minutes of play.
The first minor penalty of the night came six minutes into the second period as Jim Slater got the gate for roughing but the Isles failed to convert on the opportunity and the score remained 1-0.
The Islanders hungry for a goal, put all kinds of pressure on the Jets as the second period rolled on but Pavelec and Jets blue-liners had a solution for everything thrown toward their net to keep their team up by one.
In the dying seconds of the second period, Nik Antropov took a slapshot in the arm causing him to drop his stick and head immediately to the dressing room in discomfort.
Islanders dominated the shot clock 19-6 in the second period alone but the score remained 1-0 after 40 minutes.
Bad news continued for the depleted Jets blueline as Randy Jones blocked a shot with the inside of his right foot that caused him to instantly collapse on the ice. Jones limped off of the ice and onto the bench but did not go right to the dressing room.
The Islanders continued to battle hard but couldn't solve Pavelec. Both teams were disciplined in the third period as there were no penalties for either team.
Johnny Oduya gave the Jets some breathing room at 16:04 of the final frame as he fired a wrist shot that banked off of the Islanders d-man in front of the net and into the net.
The Islanders pulled Dipietro from the goal but the plan of attack failed as Alexander Burmistrov sealed the deal tossing the puck into the empty net to make it 3-0.
After being outshot badly in the second period, the Jets flipped the shots around and outshot the hometeam 12-6 in the final 20 minutes of play.
