Saturday night turned out to be a terrific game between the New Jersey Devils and the Winnipeg Jets. Ondrej Pavelec made his fifth straight start for the Winnipeg Jets and continued his stellar play making 25 stops, while all-star Martin Brodeur took the crease at the other end of the rink making 25 saves.

Twelve minutes into the first period, the Winnipeg Jets powerplay went to work against the red-hot Devils PK after Patrik Elias was booked for cross checking. The Devils killed the penalty without allowing a single Jets shot through to Martin Brodeur.

Just after the penalty to Elias expired, the Devils turned on the pressure on Ondrej Pavelec. An odd man rush ended with Pavelec well out of his crease and the puck still free, but the Jets defence kept the disc out of the net. The Devils hammered a few more shots on Pavelec, but the Jets maintained the scoreless period.

Chris Thorburn and Mark Fraser dropped the mitts after a scrum in front of Martin Brodeur. Each fighter landed a few good shots with Fraser’s jersey getting the most punishment in the draw.

4:08 into the second period Dainius Zubrus skated into the Jets zone on a 2-on-1 with Patrik Elias. Zubrus took the puck into the corner on the left wing, and feed Elias in the slot who powered the puck past a stretched Ondrej Pavelec, giving the Devils a 1-0 lead.

With seven minutes left in the second period, Adam Henrique stole the puck in the neutral zone and broke in on Ondrej Pavelec on a partial breakaway. With the Winnipeg defender hanging right behind Henrique, the Devils forward swooped in a backhanded the puck over the shoulder of the Jets goaltender to give New Jersey the 2-0 lead in the second period.

6:43 in the third period Mark Flood, with his head up, fired the puck on goal from the left point. The puck snuck past the blocker of Martin Brodeur giving the Jets their first goal of the game, and giving Flood his first NHL goal of his career.

Devils’ forward David Clarkson was called for tripping at 10:50 in the third period. The Jets powerplay went to work, with outstanding pressure in the Devils zone. It was a shooting gallery as Zach Bogosian and Dustin Byfuglien hammered shot after shot from the point, but the Devils PK showed their worth, keeping the Jets off the board.

Late in the third period the puck was lost on a high bounce in the Devils’ zone and Jim Slater was the only player that seemed to know where it was. Slater found the puck near the face-off dot and wired a wrist shot past Martin Brodeur to tie the game 2-2 at 17:15 in the third.

With less than a minute left in the game, Ondrej Pavelec made an unbelievable toe stop, but the puck was left hanging near the crease. Evander Kane was called for hooking at 19:12 in the third as he tied up the Devils’ player that was pursuing the puck. The Jets PK kept the Devils off the scoreboard until the end of the third, forcing the extra period.

With 1:28 left in the overtime period Adam Henrique ended the game in overtime, getting his second breakaway goal of the game as he took the puck in the neutral zone and through the Jets zone. Henrique fired the puck past Pavelec to end the game, giving the Devils a 3-2 win.
