After going down 1-0 just 3:53 into the game, the Winnipeg Jets quickly found their legs and answered back by scoring three goals in the second period to defeat Washington 4-1 Thursday night.
tallied a pair of goals, and Blake Wheeler
finally got the monkey off his back scoring his first of the season to help lead the Jets to a sweet victory.
stopped 31 of 32 shots thrown his way earning the second star of the night in his 11th consecutive start.
The Jets will look for a homestand sweep on Saturday afternoon as the visiting Philadelphia Flyers are in Winnipeg for an afternoon matinee. Catch the game live at 2:00 pm on CBC.
It took 3:53 for the Capitals to get on the scoreboard as Alexander Semin took a nice pass from Jason Chimera, faked his way past his defender Johnny Oduya
, and tossed the puck over the shoulder of Ondrej Pavelec
, beating him glove-side from a tough angle. 1-0 Caps.
The Jets answered back as Alexander Burmistrov
dug the puck out of the corner looking for Evander Kane
Kane battled his way through four Caps jerseys and snapped the puck top-shelf on Michal Neuvirth to tie the game at 7:51 of the opening period.
The Capitals took the first penalty of the night as Dennis Wideman got the gate for interference at 9:08 but the home team could not capitalize on the man advantage. The Caps would later have a power play chance of their own but Pavelec and his penalty killers were there to shut the door and keep the game tied at one.
After 20 minutes of play, the Jets were on top 11-10 in shots.
Kane widened the gap for the Jets at 6:38 of the middle frame with a little help from Kyle Wellwood
Wellwood won a board battle down low in the Capitals zone and found Kane open in the circle. Kane took no time to blast one over Neuvirth's glove to give the Jets a 2-1 lead.
Less than a minute later, Blake Wheeler
finally found his first goal of the season on the power play. Bryan Little
dished the puck over to Wheeler who was driving hard to the net. Wheeler charged the crease and made a nice move to get around Neuvirth and into the back of the net. Wheelers power play tally lifted the Jets to a 3-1 lead at 8:31.
Things went from good to great in a hurry as the Jets continued to break down the Capitals. It all started on another power play with a shot from Stapleton. His shot hit traffic in front of Neuvirth but Andrew Ladd
was able to scoop up the rebound and send a nice pass over to Wellwood, wide open to the right of the crease. With Neuvirth down and out, Wellwood couldn't miss sending the puck to the top shelf to make it 4-1.
The second period came to an end but the Jets put up three goals on the board and were holding onto a 4-1 lead heading into the final period. Shots were 25-24 Capitals.
The pace of the game slowed down cosiderably as the Jets held onto their 4-1 lead. Just four minutes into the period, Caps goaltender Neuvirth, took a tripping penalty for taking down Kane just outside his crease. The Jets put the pressure back on the Caps during the minor but couldn't get one into the net.
The Capitals would have a chance of their own near the midway mark of the final frame with Tanner Glass
in the box for slashing. Although the offensive weapons of the Washington team came awefully close to tightening the gap, Pavelec stood on his head to keep the puck on the right side of the goal line.
Time ran out on the Washington Capitals as they were unable to solve Pavelec tonight. The Jets drop the Capitals 4-1 at the MTS Centre.
The Jets will look to make it three in a row at home as they face the Philadelphia Flyers Saturday afternoon. Game time is 2:00 pm. Catch the action on CBC or listen on TSN Radio 1290.
