Three goals in the first 7:38 of the second period put the Devils up by four midway through the game, a hole too deep for the Jets to claw their way out of, as they drop a 5-1 final to the Devils Tuesday night.
Patrik Elias tallied a three-point game on a night that he was honoured for playing in his 1000th NHL game, while Ilya Kovalchuk scored two key goals that wound up to make all the difference when picking up two points at the end of the game.
Tobias Enstrom picked up the Jets lone goal in the third period and has now scored the last two goals for the Jets.
The Jets will board a plane bound for winter-Winnipeg to get ready to welcome the Buffalo Sabres into town Thursday night. Puck drops at 7:30 pm.
Both teams kicked off the game with energy and intensity. Jim Slater didn't waste much time to force Martin Brodeur to make key save as he pulled out a two-pad-stack and then slid across the crease just in time to keep the game scoreless.
Slater took the game's first penalty for hooking at 5:48 but the penalty kill unit was able to keep the door shut on the Devils opportunity and the game went on.
Ilya Kovalchuk got the Devils on the board late in the opening period on a nifty long up-ice pass from Zach Parise. Parise flipped the puck past d-man Toby Enstrom to set up Kovalchuk with a golden breakaway opportunity. The speedy Russian made no mistake forcing Chris Mason to slide across his net, which creating room between his legs for the puck to trickle in. With just 1:01 remaining in the first period, it was 1-0 Devils.
Shots after 20 minutes were 9-6 Devils.
With momentum on their side, the Devils add to their lead just 1:32 into the second period. This time it is Petr Sykora wired one from the point that made its way through traffic and past a screened Mason to make it 2-0. Tallinder and Elias pick up the assists on the play.
Devils David Clarkson widened the gap even more just 3:18 later. The play started with Clarkson beating Mark Stuart along the boards at the blueline to set up the play down low. Clarkson took a chance on a tough angle shot to the right of Mason that beat him short-side. The Devils third goal forced Jets coach Claude Noel to give his team a timeout to slow things down as Evander Kane was headed to the penalty box.
With two Jets in the box, the Devils took another bite and made it 4-0. Kovalchuk picked up his second of the night as he was able to lift one over Mason's shoulder. Three goals in 6:06 had Noel turn to goaltender Ondrej Pavelec to step in to relieve Mason of his duties.
That's all the damage that would be done in two periods, as the Devils left to the dressing room in full control of the game leading 4-0.
Tobias Enstrom finally gets the Jets on the board at 8:18 of the third period. Antropov passed the puck to Enstrom on the left point. Enstrom fired a hard slap shot that just caught the end of Brodeur's stick to direct it into the back of the net. Ron Hainsey picked up the goal's second assist. 4-1 Devils.
Elias answered back for the Devils as he caught Pavelec out of position. Sykora snapped a shot on net that Pavelec kicked out the rebound got to the tape of Elias who ended up with a wide open net to the right of Pavelec.
Time wound down in regulation on the Jets as they dropped a 5-1 decision in New Jersey. They head back to Winnipeg for a pair of games starting with the visiting Buffalo Sabres Thursday night.
