The Jets wore their hearts on their sleves tonight in a must-win crucial match-up against the Washington Capitals. After being down 3-0 in the first period, the Jets found their legs and found a way to claw back into the game and eventually win 4-3 in OT.

Goals from Ben Maxwell and Bryan Little in the second period had them down 3-2 in the second period. Spencer Machacek picked up his first NHL career goal with under four minutes to play in regulation to tie the game and keep the Jets in it.

Tim Stapleton picked up the overtime winner as the Jets took a big two points from the Capitals. They now head to Nashville to face the Predators tomorrow night. Catch that one on CBC at 6:00 pm.

FIRST PERIOD

Both teams broke out of the gates hungry and full of energy. Both goalies were going to have to be on their game tonight.

The Jets came out physical as they had connected on 10 hits through the first half of the opening period, with Alexander Burmistrov getting three of them.

Blake Wheeler took the game's first penalty of the night as he was caught for hooking behind the net at 13:27. The Capitals had a couple good chances on the advantage but Pavelec was able to shut the door and keep them off the board.

Jason Chimera opened the scoring just after their power play had expired at 16:06. Chimera took a feed from Jeff Halpern and was off on a partial-breakaway rush. He raced in alone on Pavelec, deked and put it past him on the back-hand. 1-0 Capitals late in the period.

After twenty minutes, the Jets trailed the Caps 1-0 but led 8-7 in shots on goal. They also led 15-11 in the hits column.

SECOND PERIOD

Alex Ovechkin quickly made it 2-0 as he blasted a wrist shot from inside the left circle that flew into the back of the net stick-side on Pavelec.

Ovechkin later picked up his 35th of the season and second of the night at 5:47 on a delayed penalty. Chimera set up Ovechkin in the middle of the left circle and he blasted a slap shot top shelf on Pavelec. 3-0 Capitals.

The Jets answered back with Ben Maxwell getting his team on the board. Tim Stapleton found Maxwell in the crease and he spun around and put the puck past Michal Neuvirth on the backhand. 3-1 Caps. Spencer Machacek picked up the second assist.

Minutes later Jim Slater dropped the gloves with Brooks Laich at centre ice trying to spark his team....His idea paid off as Bryan Little closed the gap at 8:12. Tobias Enstrom blasted a slap shot that rang off the post but Little was there to send home the rebound. 3-2 Caps.

With Ron Hainsey in the box for cross-checking, the Capitals put the pressure on testing Pavelec and the Jets. Mark Stuart absolutely robbed Mike Knuble as he made a diving save in the crease in front of the wide open net and kept the game at 3-2.

After two periods, the Jets trailed 3-2 but led 23-21 in shots.

THIRD PERIOD

The Capitals did a good job of holding on to their 3-2 lead through the first half of the third period. The Jets did keep the pressure on and were throwing everything at Neuvirth but nothing was going in.

They did have a power play opportunity and almost evened things up but the strong Caps kill kept them trailing by a goal.

With 3:45 left in regulation, Machacek tied the game for the Jets as he wristed home his first NHL goal. Maxwell found him down low and he made no mistake putting it past Neuvirth. As time ticked down in the final period, both the Jets and Caps opened things up trying to end the game in the dying minutes but the buzzer went and both teams would battle it out in OT.

The Jets battled hard in overtime and were rewarded as Dustin Byfuglien sent a nice feed to Tim Stapleton open in front and he snapped home the overtime winner. Jets complete an amazing comeback and take the Capitals in extra time.
