The Winnipeg Jets had high hopes of snapping their two-game losing skid at home tonight as they hosted the Boston Bruins.
Things started off on the right foot as Alex Burmistrov got his team on the board early in the second period but the Bruins would answer back to tie, later in the period. Then with 27 seconds remaining in the period, Evander Kane regained the lead for the Jets, only to have the party spoiled yet again, as Daniel Paille tied it with just 1.5 seconds left.
The Bruins carried their momentum into the final frame after Brad Marchand picked up the go-ahead goal just 36 seconds in on the power play. The Jets tried to even things up but just weren't able to solve Tuukka Rask and slid to a 3-2 final Sunday night.
The Jets hit the road Monday for a five-game road trip starting in Buffalo on Tuesday night.
At the midway marker of the opening period, the Jets only had one shot tallied on the board to the Bruins five. They came out fairly flat and desperately needed some sort of spark to get the crowd behind them.
Shawn Thornton took the game's first penalty as he went off for cross-checking at 9:41. Unfortunately, the Jets weren't able to capitalize on the man-advantage, although they were able to create a great chance in front just as the power play expired.
Neither team could get much going as the period continued, resulting in both teams going to their dressing rooms without a goal through 20 minutes. Shots were 9-5 in favour of the Bruins.
Alex Burmistrov got the Jets on the board at 1:43 of the second period after he tapped home the rebound of Zach Bogosian's blast from the point. Zach Redmond picked up the second helper on Burmistrov's second goal of the season. 1-0 Jets.
The Bruins answered back to tie things up with 9:03 left in the period. Zdeno Chara fired a hard slap shot from the point that was deflected by Tyler Seguin past Pavelec and into the net. The goal was reviewed for a chance of high-stick, but the goal stood to tie the game.
Evander Kane put the Jets back on top with 26 seconds to play in the period after Nik Antropov shoveled the puck out from behind the net and sent a perfect pass to Kane in front to flip the puck up and over Tuukka Rask.
Just when the Jets thought they were about to head to the third period up by a goal, Daniel Paille evened the board with just 1.5 seconds left in the frame. Johnny Boychuk blasted a slapshot from the blueline and Paille deflected the puck past Pavelec.
After 40 minutes, the Jets and Bruins were in a 2-2 tie. Shots were 22-14 Bruins. The Bruins had blocked 17 Jets shots through those 40 minutes.
Just nine seconds into the final period, Ron Hainsey took a tripping penalty that ended up costing the Jets a goal. Patrice Bergeron made a nice play to find Brad Marchant wide open in the slot. He moved the puck to his back hand and flipped it up and over Pavelec's shoulder, 36 seconds into the period. 3-2 Bruins.
With just over six minutes left in regulation, the Jets were on the hunt for the equalizer. Rich Peverley went off for tripping up Blake Wheeler, and the Jets saw their second power play of the night but again, were not able to take advantage on the power play.
The Jets battled hard in the last couple minutes of regulation but were just not able to get the bounces they needed to solve Rask and the Bruins. Time ran out and the Jets dropped to their third straight loss. They will look to get things going on the road as they embark on a five-game trip that kicks off Tuesday night in Buffalo.
