The Winnipeg Jets were looking to make it three in a row on the road as they took on Philadelphia on Saturday afternoon. Evander Kane opened the scoring putting his team on the board early in the first period but penalties caught up to them later in the game and they fell to a 5-3 final.
Olli Jokinen snapped a nine game pointless drought and Alex Burmistrov tallied his third of the season. Brayden Schenn notched two goals and an assist to help lift his team over the visiting Jets.
The Jets will be right back at it tomorrow in New Jersey against the Devils who fell 5-1 to the Washington Capitals Saturday. Watch that game at 4:00 CST on TSN Jets and on TSN Radio 1290.
The Jets were off to another good start as Evander Kane picked up the first goal of the day at 4:48 of the opening period. Nik Antropov dug the puck out from behind the net, and sent a nice to Kane at the post to finish the play and make it 1-0.
Moments after Kane's goal, Timonen took the game's first penalty, going off for interference putting the Jets on the power play. The power play went to work with Andrew Ladd making a nice play to dance around his defender and get to the net. Close, but no cigar as the Jets couldn't solve Bryzgalov this time.
Chris Thorburn and Wayne Simmonds dropped the gloves to shake things up and try to ignite the crowd. After the even draw, both went off to serve their 5 minute majors.
It was all Jets through the first half of the period, as they lead 11-1 on the shot clock. The Flyers finally put on some pressure with just over seven minutes to play in the period but Pavelec was up for the test and made three big saves in a row to keep the door closed.
The Flyers finally found the back of the net at 15:18 of the period as Brayden Schenn. Daniel Briere blasted a shot on net that Pavelec kicked out but Schenn was there to put home the rebound. 1-1.
With 3:03 to play, Kane and Schenn went head to head in a fight and would sit for the rest of the period.
It was all Flyers in the second half of the period as they banked 13 shots in a row and challenged Pavelec, who was in the zone, making some huge saves keeping the game tied. Shots ended up 16-12 through 20 minutes.
A good start for the Jets in the second period as Olli Jokinen made it 2-1 at 2:35. Blake Wheeler made a nice pass to Jokinen inside the circle. He spun around and fired a hard shot that ripped right through Bryzgalov. Jokinen's goal snapped a 9 game pointless drought for him.
Alex Burmistrov later made it 3-1 after he tipped home a point shot from Grant Clitsome. It all started with a face-off win by Nik Antropov. Dustin Byfuglien fed Clitsome who blasted the hard shot on net. Burmistrov, trying to get out of the way, reached back and conveniently connected with a perfect tip.
With just under six minutes to play in the period, the Jets found themselves down two men for 1:58 seconds as Byfuglien and Slater both went off seconds apart for high-sticking. The Flyers power play went to work and made the Jets pay as Claude Giroux fired a laser of a shot from the slot that flew past Slater and under the arm of Pavelec into the net. 3-2 Jets.
The Jets killed off the remaining minute of the penalty and successfully killed off the remaining minutes in the middle period and headed to the dressing room leading 3-2. The Flyers have not won a game this season when trailing after two periods.
Shots were 31-26 Flyers after two.
The Flyers tied things up at 6:18 of the third period with Brayden Schenn picking up his second of the game and sixth of the season on the power play. Jakub Voracek made a nice pass onto the tape of Schenn open in the slot who snapped a quick shot that beat Pavelec. 3-3 tie.
Then at 7:49 of the third, Kane and Hartnell each took two minutes for roughing but Kane was awarded an extra two minutes for cross-checking. The Jets struggling penalty kill went back to work and again, the Flyers made them pay. This time Schenn made a nice play down low sending a backhand pass to Simmonds at the back door. With the wide open net, Simmonds buried the puck to give the Flyers their first lead of the game.
The Jets earned a late power play to try to tie things up but couldn't get too much going and failed to pull even with the Flyers in this one. The Flyers added an empty net goal to seal the deal and take the 5-3 win at home Saturday afternoon.
